What The Bible Says About Contacting The Dead

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT CONTACTING THE DEAD

The following is important information and reference, written by a knowledgable and valued member of this site, on why we should avoid contacting the dead:

When someone thinks they are talking with the dead, they are deceived by some familiar spirit, or demon, or other evil being. If God created a place of confinement, and He has, then I believe no one will leave that place unless He permits it.

In the following scriptures written by Luke, Abraham, who was obviously dead at the time, clearly stated that NO ONE was going back for any reason, those still living continue as they do even until they die.

If you didn’t already know, the Old Testament tells us that Elijah walked with God, and was taken by God, and never saw death.

Genesis 5:24
And Elijah walked with God: and he was not; For God took him.

Hebrews 11:5
Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him.

2Kings 2:11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. (This chariot, was probably some kind of craft created to transport a human being. just a guess)

There is one exception…, Moses who was dead came to the mount of transfiguration (along with Enoch who never died) to speak with Jesus just prior to His crucifixion. Jesus died and was resurrected 3 days later.

In this case, the rich man like any other dead person would not be able to communicate with the living.

Read about the one exception God allowed as it appears in the book of Matthew listed below.

The witch of Endor having a familiar spirit…, a familiar spirit was one in a relationship with this particular witch, so when she called, she was not calling a spirit of anyone dead, rather she called “it” and it would deceive the one making an inquiry.
This scripture makes it crystal clear that God refused to answer Saul. Why would he allow Saul to speak with Samuel? He didn’t allow it.

1 Samuel 28:5 And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.

1 Samuel 28:6 And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

1 Samuel 28:7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a FAMILIAR SPIRIT, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a FAMILIAR SPIRIT at Endor.

1 Samuel 28:8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, DIVINE unto me by the FAMILIAR SPIRIT, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.

1 Samuel 28:9 And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have FAMILIAR SPIRITS, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

1 Samuel 28:10 And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.

1 Samuel 28:11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

1 Samuel 28:12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.

1 Samuel 28:13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.

1 Samuel 28:14 And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. AND SAUL PERCEIVED THAT IT WAS SAMUEL, AND HE STOOPED WITH HIS FACE TO THE GROUND, AND BOWED HIMSELF.

1 Samuel 28:15 And Samuel (actually it was the FAMILIAR SPIRIT) said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.

1 Samuel 28:16 Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?

1 Samuel 28:17 And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:

1 Samuel 28:18 Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.

1 Samuel 28:19 Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: AND TOMORROW SHALT THOU AND THY SONS BE WITH ME (these are not the words of God, God had already made it clear that consulting with witches and familiar spirits was a serious sin, these were the words from the familiar spirit):the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

1 Samuel 28:20 Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.

1 Samuel 28:6 makes it pretty clear that God would not answer King Saul at all! God would not communicate through a spirit of the dead or familiar spirits, He condemned all of this. Saul was very desperate and full of fear, and he broke the very Law that he once enforced.

Matthew 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

Matthew 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Matthew 17:3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

Matthew 17:4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

Matthew 17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Matthew 17:6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

Matthew 17:7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

Matthew 17:8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

Matthew 17:9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

Matthew 17:10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

Matthew 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

Matthew 17:12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

Matthew 17:13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

These disciples initially did not understand exactly who Christ was referring to when he spoke of “Elias.”
John the Baptist was in his own spirit just like Elias…, we know what happened to John the Baptist (who came before Christ) he was eventually imprisoned and subsequently killed.

“Elias” was literally the Old Testament prophet Elijah. Elijah had never died; he was taken by God. John the Baptist had the same kind of spirit that Elijah had.

Moses is the only one that ever left his confinement between death and resurrection, in order to serve God’s purpose, to counsel Jesus before the crucifixion.

Considering all the punishment He was about to receive, it makes sense that Jesus may have needed some counsel…, most of the disciples were sleeping at the time.

In Summary

The truly dead people CAN NOT communicate with the living, they are in confinement according to the life they once lived.
The living are not supposed to be familiar with evil spirits/demons or such.

So, who has been speaking “as the dead” with the living? Certainly familiar spirits, and probably numerous other deceitful evil beings.

And as a matter of history, there has been a lot of fraud for the sake of taking money from customers who don’t know any better.

To quote eyepriestess,
“so what we think are ghosts are either demons or angels.”
I believe that is why God tells us that we must discern the difference between the evil and the good or be deceived”.

  1. That must have taken you weeks/months to gather all that information, and it is very much appreciated Greg for sharing it with us!

  2. Rebecca says:

This so confusing for me..I never understand the bible when I’ve read it.. I wish it was in English!! Lol

  3. ANDREA says:

It’s funny that I actually understood most of this… I guess its true if you are willing to listen then god will open your eyes. I am confused though, has elija already come in the form of elias? It says something about that in the fiction novels left behind.
Also I hope whoever rvrn reads these can help me, the father of my child just passed away. I really would like to see him again. I understand that witches, psychics, and such are not the right answer. I understand that demons or angels have a habit of deciet but I just wanted to know is there any possibility that God gives permission to his actual children to come back? Has it ever happened? I read another article about if you encounter a spirit to question it to make sure it is from God or if it is there to devieve you. What questions would I ask? If it was a messenger from jesus christ son of god? I would not dare try and contact them due to the horrific stories I’ve heard of upsetting the angels and disobeying god. I’m not sure exactly how it all works but thats an even better reason why I don’t want to find out. No instructions from god, its a no go.Anyway, I just really miss daniel. I love him so much. Is he with God? Is he trapped somewhere simillar to pergatory? I’m really confused. I want to be sure he made it.I guess I should trust God’s decision but it just hurts so much. Please respond??

  4. I’m so sorry for your loss Andrea,

i don’t think anyone knows for sure what happens when we die, but this is what i believe through encountering paranormal experiences. First, i think it is not a good idea to contact psychics (you just don’t know who is genuine).

I believe that you will get some kind of sign when you least expect it, i had this happen with a very special dog i owned, which drowned at sea ( i have never lost anyone close to me that is human before and my husband and i were very lucky not to have drowned too on that day). It was about a year afterwards and i very unexpectedly felt her (or should i say a presence, not necessarilly her, but it as a nice presence) presence on me as i lay in bed one night, i could not see her or touch her, i just felt her presence. People who have experienced this will know how that feels and it is a fantastic feeling…you just know it’s there…that is the only way i can describe it.

I do not believe that good people are in purgatory Andrea, why should they be?, that wasn’t really a question to you, just a question in general. I know from research that when people have NDE’s, they say that they have all the emotions inside of them, that they have when alive. You and your husband have imprinted that positive, love energy in the universe, like a carbon footprint, therefore, you will always be linked in some way. I think when you love someone so much, there is always a link there for eternity.

I hope one day that you will feel that link as i did with my dog. I’m sure you will when you least expect it! x

BTW, i’ve only had good experiences since i became a believer in God…never bad.

And, i would recommend you read the new testament, rather than the old testament, when looking for answers, it was Jesus who came to save us, His word is the way now…He is the saviour of us!

We also have to remember that the old testament was written by human beings, who Jesus abhored at times…referring to them as men in fine robes….etc (I cannot remember the text, but it was more or less saying they were more interested in their finary than doing good).

  5. JHC says:

Andrea, I miss dearly the dead. I miss my parents; I miss my friends; I miss my first love. In my mind’s eye, I see them. I see my father’s hearty laugh, my mother’s bright eyes and smile. I hear the wisdom and tales of my friends. I can still feel the rapture of love in the arms of a long-dead partner. We all do. It is life-and memory. And we, too, will soon enough be positive memories in the mind’s eye of the living. In Judaeism the dead’s souls live on only in the hearts of the living. We have regrets for words not said, how much we loved and respected them, how deeply they influence our journey. They can never return to this plane-they shouldn’t. They must make room for new souls to experience the seemingly limitless expanse of life. However, they are still close by, part of us.

  6. I think these presences we feel are angels, just comforting us!

  7. Tammy says:

I truly do not know what to think. I will say, I have food for thought. Thank you.The questions just keep coming and sometimes it just takes time to get the answers.
