THE MASON AND HIS WIFE – A USA HAUNTING
I come from the USA where I would like to tell you about a haunting.
The house where I grew up was built by my grandparents in the late 1940’s. The area was surrounded by big stately homes built in the early 1800’s. They all had private family cemeteries behind them. Just down the road was, or still is, a civil war cemetery. The whole area is creepy, complete with a mental institution, which has now been turned into a prison at the end of the road.
I remember, when you entered my house there was always a heavy feeling in the air…hard to describe, but almost like a pressure. A lot of my friends would come to spend the night only to leave and later say they were sick, then they never returned again.
Ever since I can remember, the house always gave me an ill-feeling. Our family dog would sit under the table and just move his eyes all around as though something was there. I knew there was something strange, it was hard not to feel there was some sort of presence.
When I was growing up, my Mom would let my brother and me stay home from school alot. It wasn’t until years later I found out why. When she was alone in the house “they” would change the TV channel and move furniture around upstairs (my bedroom at the time)!
One year my father decided to paint the exterior of the house, so we took a picture of the front of the house. There were two picture windows in the front and when the film was developed there were four white figures in a portrait like fashion (almost like they were waiting to pose) standing in the window of my parent’s bedroom. This is around the time we started to ask why there was a statue of the virgin Mary hidden in the rafters of the basement. To protect the house was the only answer we got.
Strange things happened all the time. When going downstairs, a black shadow would slide along the wall and follow me down. I told my Mom who said that the same thing happens to her, that’s why she just puts our laundry folded on the stairs and never goes up until someone was home.
My father claims he got up to get a drink of water one night and bumped into something, but nothing was there. We already knew something was there because of the picture.
My parents ended up divorcing when I was 20. I had already married by this time and was living in the same town. My father stayed in the house and remarried. The woman he married was from Florida. They decided to fix the house and sell it to move to Florida. She was still in Florida so I went over to the house one night and my dad was there. He said he was getting ready to go out and that I should remember to turn out all the lights and lock the door before leaving. He then left so I went upstairs to my “old” bedroom. I was sitting at a vanity putting on makeup when I suddenly got this strange sensation causing every hair on the back of my neck to stand up. I looked over and there was this white figure of a man standing with his arms folded looking at me. I ran out of that house so fast that you could have seen a smoke trail.
Now this is the interesting part, not long before my grandmother had told my brother that when the house was being built by a mason, his wife had died in the basement. (This was the mason’s last job before he retired and he wanted to take a picture of him and his wife on his last job). The stairs in the basement weren’t built yet and his wife had to descend using a ladder. She was a heavy set woman and while climbing down had a heart attack and died in the basement. This doesn’t explain the two others in the photo though.
My father’s wife came back from Florida to help sell the house and this is what she said: “I was standing at the foot of the stairs with your father and he asked me what I thought about the way the house looked”. She said just right then and there you could hear something running down the stairs and a cold blast of air passed their faces and what’s more you could hear the front door slamming.
They did go on to sell the house and I’ve been back a few times to see the owners who say there is nothing strange in the house. Even myself had felt a clearing in the air like a lifting of the pressure the house once felt… well empty now.
There are alot more things which happened in that house, but I think it would take too long to tell at the moment. I’m not the only one who saw things there. If you know where the old Rome state school is…then you’ll know what area i’m talking about.

That figure you saw with his arms folded, what did he look like? Did you see features? That must have been terrifying. I have never seen a ghost, not sure i would like to, maybe if i’m in the presence of others would be great, but not when i’m on my own…noooo way!
I wondered if you took this haunting experience to your next house? The reason i say that, the new owners didn’t have anything happen to them.
Hi Eyepriestess, Yes that was scary I always thought if I saw a ghost maybe I would ask it a question, that was what I was thinking till I actually saw one! But I do take comfort in knowing that when we pass on there is something more! The guy wasn’t really tall he looked like he was wearing jeans and boots with rolled up shirt sleeves, bet he had a good laugh seeing me run! I never had anyother experiences like that I think it was just the house cause my dad and step-mom never had any either! I think the mason put the blame on us for the wife’s death, but that blast of cold air is more like an evil presence, you think? Thank-you for publishing my story.
I dont know whats worse seeing that figure or the blast of cold air.
Did the man look threatening? Did he look at you and know you were there, or did he seem to be a residual?
Debbie, no he looked directly at me, and his stance was almost like he was trying to intimidate me!
This definately wasn’t a residual haunting Debbie. I don’t know if you know but residuals are playbacks of events in the past, the image is not aware of you as it isn’t a spirit, it is just an image.
So it seemed to be evil if it tried to intimidate you Karen. How did you get past him when you ran out of the room? Where you like inches away from him?
Oh my goodness yes, he was like a foot away and when i ran past him, i could of practically bumped into him! I think cause he was always there and i knew it too, that at the end he just wanted me to really see him to prove his presence, then I didn’t look back cause i was too afraid. The strange thing is that I didn’t get rid of this strange sensation till I got off the road and on to the highway.
OMG that must have been the most frightening experience! To have to pass him, so close…hell!!
Have you seen any photos of the mason? Could it have been him, do you think?
Can you describe how you felt?
Also did the cold air feel threatening?
There are some pictures of the house when it was being built (all black &white ones) I don’t know if my father still has these photos as when my grandmother passed on he inherited alot of photo albums. I can ask, that’s a good question I never thought about that!
If you could get hold of a photo of him, it would be brilliant, especially if he is how you described above.
By the way Karen, demon hunter has sent you a great message in the forum, under ‘Hi Karen’.
Demon Hunter, how i felt? WOW i just had this strang sensation that all my hairs were standing up and a tingiling sensation all over, that’s what made me turn my head it’s wierd! you ever hear the expression “you look like you’ve just seen a ghost”? I wish I had a photo of what I looked like. Knowing they were there didn’t bother me too much, but when he actually manifested himself in front of me that was completly different! My father who had a best friend (now passed away) his wife commited suicide and my room use to be my brother’s before he moved out and one night he was so freaked out crying cause he said that ha woke up and saw here sitting in the chair in his room. My parents can back up this story! There were so many strange occurences in that house, supposedly there is an indian cemetarty on the property, but i’m not sure of that.
The trouble is when you see something like your brother saw, you don’t know if it is really the person you think it is, or a demon. Demons come in disguise to fool you and draw you in.
If there is an old Indian cemetary, you could maybe look this up on the internet, you may come across some information.
eyepriestess, outside of the perimiter of the house were farmer’s fields e.g. corn, green breans these enormous fields, we used to play in the corn fields when we were kids, supposedly the neighbor down the street kept seeing a lady appearing in a white gown in her house. The mental institution that I mentioned that was converted into a medium security prison, well they built new houses on our road called SRU houses to accomadate to the mentally handicapped. My mom worked at sru 4 just about 4 houses after ours, mind you there was a bit of forest that seperated the houses so when i say 4 houses down it was close but not really. One night her colleuge was in the kitchen alone (patients were in bed) and she said that she saw an indian on a white horse come charging through the kitchen and then disappear!
That sounds like a residual haunting with the indian and the white horse. How was the woman after this happened? Gosh, she must have been in a right state, poor thing.
As i’m talking to you all on here, i just thought you might be interested to know that my cat is having kittens at the moment…ahhh, there’s two so far.
Eyepriestess, actually no one believed her and i hate when people are like that……..I want a kitten!
I know, it’s bad enough that you’ve just had a scarey experience without people saying you’re lying.
The kits are about 2 inches with black fur. I thought they were bald when first born, but they’re not. I’m going to post some photos of them over the w/end.
aw how cute and perfect too……..black cat’s
Hey, i’d better be careful this thread doesn’t turn into an ‘all about cat’s’ thread, like we nearly turned the exorcist thread into an ‘all about our kids’ thread,
That cold blast of air you felt, did that feel threatening? If it did, then i’m wondering if ‘they’ were more than just ghosts.
Well, maybe our kids are a little “possessed”! I think it was just an evil presence that really wanted to get out fast for some reason, I don’t really know what it was but I know that cold is associated with evil
Wow this is great …all the questions answered. I would like to thank you for one, for being very clear and quick with your replies. Excellent post!
Thank-you too for reading my story. I think later I will write about the other stuff that happend in the house.
Karen, if you click on the link below, Liderien has very kindly posted advice for your phone in the comments on here: http://www.worldmysteriesandtrueghosttales.com/a-visit-to-borley-rectory-planned/
This is an awesome thread!
I just want to put a plug in for the skeptical, as I am quasi-skeptical myself.
To say that you saw a ghost of any manifestation is quite unbelievable in the natural sense. To be skeptical is to be…well… normal, or should I say average/common. Not to mention the fear factor. If people deny such happenings, they do not have to deal with the possibility of its existence. Another perfectly natural human reaction. We should not fault them for it.
Now, to say that someone actually saw a supernatural manifestation and then that same person to deny its existence would be a very good reason to be upset at their response. lol!
JMO…so always up for debate…;)
Liderien
Liderien, so true, people can deny it out of fear of the unknown, I always believe(almost always) other peoples experiences with ghosts. You’re right on being skeptical, I would have never believe it unless I saw it. But, I know what I saw, and that is better than the show fear factor!
just some humor there!
Liderien,
It is awesome isn’t it? it would be great if more threads went like this one.
I agree with your statement and it is perfectly natural for anyone to be skeptical, it is only when people out and out call people a liar that it becomes an issue. When people do such a thing, they then shouldn’t care what that person has to say anymore.
I am less skeptical than most only because I have had my own paranormal experience.
I think I’d better put a back to ‘home page’ link here, don’t know about how you all feel, but it’s taking me ages to scroll back up again
Here it is: http://www.worldmysteriesandtrueghosttales.com/
What we are talking about is extremely controversial. If we can look at it from a more scientific view point, we can take criticism and skeptism less personally. I know it is personal when you say you experienced something traumatic in the supernatural and others not believe your claims (being called a liar, even). We somehow take that as an assault on our intelligence and convictions. However, the individuals who challenge our claim is not challenging on a personal level per se, but on a scientific level. What you say affects the very balance of nature and all they know to be true, so it becomes controversial. If we can recognize this natural human behavior, we can be more accepting of the challenges and the lack of belief in others without offense. This will enable you to effectively combat skepticism and bring more unbelievers to “the other side”.
How we can deal with experiences on a scientific level:
If you say, “there was this picture that had an image of the ghost, blah blah blah”, it would be best if you had that proof handy, otherwise it would benefit you (from the skeptics point of view) to never mention the photo, as failure to provide the imgane to view will only bring disbelief. Does that mean they won’t try to disprove the image…nope, but it is far better to produce the image and fight on that front, then to not provide one at all. And if the image is especially old, it can be analized for authenticity. Polariods are best as they cannot be tampered with during production.
This is just one example of dealing with claims on a scientific front. If the website you are posting is a private website subject to registration, this would not be an issue. But when posting on websites for the world to see, it is open for debate and scrutiny. And we should not take offense to it, but understand the nature of man and you can have a really decent website with controversial views and debates without hurt feelings.
Of course, I realize there will be individuals who will be hateful and spew venom of hate and miscontent, and in that case, that is a no brainer. I am not referencing those individuals, though. That is another topic altogether.
Extremely good point raised about the photo. I was wondering whether to ask Karen to remove that part last night. I too think it kind of debunks the whole story when people say they have lost the photo.
Having said that, I do believe Karen, but it does leave her wide open for much more critisism than would have normally been given.
I agree with you, I think most non-believers and their scientific ways are just scared or think they’re too smart to agree with such things, but the majority of scientisits study if there’s life on other planets, like NASA! I guess I wouln’t believe in aliens till I actually saw one. It doesn’t bother me if people think what I saw was maybe a figment of my imagination, I know what I saw and other family members also had experiences.
Didn’t catch that comment in enough time, because we were young my mom got rid of the picture as not to scare us, I still ask her today why she got rid of it,that was the proof there! My mom had terrible experiences in this house
I do believe you!
We’re just pointing out what skeptical people will raise with the mention of the photo.
It’s not really about your story, it is more on a general level which we are talking about now.
I just want you to know that I am certainly not debating this particular story, but I did use it as a reference. I neither believe nor disbelieve it. I find it quite interesting. And what I find most interesting is that the current owners of the house claim no activity. I am trying to figure out why that is so. Maybe a connection to the family versus the house? Or a connection to the father? It is certainly something to ponder.
It’s such a shame she got rid of it, but understandable when you’re young.
I’ve seen enought photos of the paranormal to know that some are genuine and others are hoax.
There was a whole bunch of photos taken by a class out walking in the countryside with their teachers. They all captured images of gold coloured angels all around them. This was on ‘its a mirracle’. Wow, was that a fantastic episode. Those photos gave me goose bumps, tremendous evidence.
I left a comment on another story here about the guy who said he lost the pictures and I’m totally agreeing with him that just cause he doesn’t have the pictures anymore, that I still believe him
That is a great analogy with the aliens, Karen. It really helps to move the concept to a parallel topic to gain understanding of the opposite view. It makes the attack less personal and creates a better debate on your claim because feelings are not involved. AWESOME!
I thought that Liderien, good move Karen!
I sway towards believing you Karen about the photo more than the other way.
I do also think that Leiderien has a point where skeptics are concerned. People are bound to question the photo.
Really am enjoying this post and comments!
Karen, did you know this comment i am now writing is the fortieth comment on this thread and it is only into the second day of posting your story! …and the night is still young (5pm in UK).
Thank you liderien.
There was once this guy talking to his grandmother about God and he said “i don’t believe nothing till i see it” and the grandmother responded “well sometimes you have to believe it to see. Ok sorry a little off topic
I like that saying Karen!
Oh when are the other kitties going to be born?
Back to home page: http://www.worldmysteriesandtrueghosttales.com/
Thank you for describing this to me Karen. I always wonder how people feel when they have these encounters.
hi Karen
very cool story. when you said you had felt that terrible feeling until you got on the highway made me think the ghost/spirit followed you! sort of chased you away? if that makes any sense. i have a sense foe some things..like terrible feelings of fear or being watched. others arent so bad at times. i feel a little scared then it goes away. but i have felt the “cold feeling” before. actually quite often, especially here at work. do post more stiries though!
Eyepreistess..i agree this is a good thread also. much better then the “do vampires exist” thread on the other site, if you know what i mean!!
Demon Hunter, you’ve never had any paranormal experience?
Yes I have felt evil presences but I never seen anything.
To see an evil spirit/demon is the most terrifying for me.
HI REBECCA, you know that is very interesting what you said about “it” following me, uh, maybe your right that was what it was! I know that sensation of being “watched” after living 18 years in this house, but I have never felt this pesence anywhere else i’ve lived…..I can tell if “something” is in a house. When my husband and I first moved here (france) we lived in an old house ,from time at night I would get this strange sensation of being watched by something in the dining room, but it was only once in a while! And two more strange things happened I was out for the day,and when I got to the front door I heard the radio on full volume and the minute I turned the lock the music stopped! Another time I was out and my husband came home before me, when I got home he said can you remember to turn off the radio before you leave cause it was really loud I assured him that when I leave the house i never leave the radio on full blast……….I don’t know what that was!
Hi Karen, I remember your brother telling me stories about the house. I don’t know how you could live there all those years
Karen,
that was realy spooky stuff. When i get time i willl look into the above . Take care!
Hey Char, Yeah you re member when Richards wife Cathy commited suicide and David saw her in his room! I know he told you about that one. You use to say you always had a weird feeling in that house! Or when grandma would come visit if no one was home she’d wait outside cause she wouln’t go in the house alone!
