THE HAUNTING OF MUIRFIELD HOUSE – PART TWO
“Perhaps the quest to solve a mystery is no sign of wisdom”- Barry Lopez
Soon after I left for college the house was put up for sale. My parents hired a real estate agent they liked very much…a smart, petite women who was from the same state as my parents. We will call her Sally. She started having experiences almost immediately. Sally was evaluating the house – clipboard in hand and in my room when an icy-cold hand slapped HARD down on her shoulder. She gasped, dropped her clipboard, and turned around. Nothing!
Another time Sally let herself and some clients into the great drawing-room. The French doors to the Library slammed shut. She opened them, and, as you can guess, no one there. The clients abruptly announced that they were no longer interested in the house. This happened, in different versions over and over. Sometimes a client would tarry in one room or another, and emerged chagrined or breathless.
The house took two years to sell. Another time Sally let herself into the drawing-room. She saw a woman walking up along the balustrade, towards the master bedroom. ‘Oh, M-’, Sally called out.
‘Yes, Sally, hello!’ My mother came to Sally from the dining room.
Sally replied. ‘M-, is there someone else in the house?’
‘No, Sally!’
‘Well, someone is upstairs going to the master bedroom.’ They then ran upstairs and tried to cut off whomever it was. You guessed it – nothing.
The house sold, finally. The people were “different”. The man had no visible means of financial support, but considering it was Hollywood, where there were professional gamblers, swindlers and so forth, we were just glad their check cleared.
10 years passed, and then the most explosive experiences were revealed, one afternoon, talking to my mother and brother B-. My mother said she saw several “strange things”, but was afraid to talk of them before, due to a nervous breakdown she had when younger, and my father threatening to lock her up if she had emotional problems again. She told us of a time she heard someone walk by a room she was sewing in. As she stood up to look, she saw a pair of boots walk away from her and down the hall…just a pair of boots.
There was something else she wanted to tell us, but my mother said something to the effect that she did not want to talk of them now.
After that, B- told his terrifying tale of the house:
A year before the sale of the house, my parents went to Mexico with my two younger brothers.
B- stayed at home as he was studying acting, and would watch old movies on a local channel until almost dawn, which happened night after night. One night alone, about 2:30 am, the television went blank. He suddenly felt he was being watched. He checked a door to an adjoining room (like the time I had been compelled to do so years before in that house). There was nothing there, but now spooked, he went upstairs to bed. Lights off, he looked down into the back yard. It was a moonlit night and B- could clearly see a man standing on the opposite side of the pool, about 125 feet away and facing him. He was dressed in a 1940s trench coat and a Fedora. All he could see of his face was the glow of a cigarette. B- looked long enough to see he cast no shadow!
After some time, our old neighbor told us that the new owners were always gone. She said she heard loud groaning, which seemed, “Not of this world” and coming from the house.
Who were the ghosts? We never could piece it together. We didn’t know the history of the previous owners, other than the couple who later killed each other. If my father ever saw anything, he never said. I never saw anything, and to my knowledge neither did my younger brothers, though we sure felt cold presences and creepiness. Perhaps some mysteries are best left eerie riddles of other times.

Absolutely fascinating ghost story JHC, do you have any photos of the house? I can put them up at the beginning of the story if you like.
I wonder if these were residual haunting, but since the man in the 1940′s trenchcoat was looking directly at your brother… maybe not.
Did your brother-B, ever get into acting?
On account that I live nearly 900 miles from the house now, it would be difficult to produce a photo on short notice, but I will contact some brothers to see what they can do. I assume it was a residual haunting. Despite some loony, violent and acrimonious events that were family-related, nobody in the house killed anybody, no matter how much they wanted to! Considering the behavior towards my mother by the previous family, it is obvious they had previous, direct conftontations with the revanents. Also, the direct contact of those who saw apparitions in the house pointed to 1930s clothing. A parapsychologist once commented that ghosts (or spirits) are dormant when active children are running around, or during any loud or histrionic activity(like parents arguing). It was interesting that most of the experiences happened after B-and I were terminally hip. sleepy, lazy teenagers!
Brother B- did act a little, getting tiny parts in TV. He told me that he got sick of always looking for work. Like many art disciplines, it takes 20 years to just get established! He sold auto parts and is a talented artist. Alas, he never quite got it together in the arts, either.
That tale could be worked into a right nice ghost story.
i did enjoy this one! it’s a mystery and i do love these kind of endings. maybe someday the history of the house will become clear. thanks so much for telling us!
I would say to Pitch, if you can make something of the story, run with it!
I fancied myself as a writer once, but found painting more profitable! Now I practice on websites! To TD, houses that are haunted need a lot of time, chronicaling, interest and coopertation from owners to verify that the otherworld is present. Some hauntings are so rich and persistent that they can be filmed. This haunting was so sporadic, depended so much on the receptiveness of the viewer. As I tried to indicate in this tale, paranormal doings depended a great deal on the how active the residents were. California, for a “new country” is remarkably haunted. Many places have way more paranormal activity than Muirfield House.
Hi,
I really enjoy the story. I am just wondering you would consider putting a picture of the house so we all could see it just to get a look it. It would be great if you could.
thanks for sharing
GE, I have been remiss in a request that EP made a couple of weeks ago. I will ask my brothers to see if they can send me something.
