THE DISAPPEARANCE OF JAMES WORSON
MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCES – OTHER DIMENSIONS – PART THREE
On September 3rd 1873, a shoemaker called, James Burne Worson from Warwickshire, England became yet another statistic of this strange phenomena.
Worson continually boasted of his superior abilities as a long-distance runner and many times stated that he could out-run anyone. Tired of listening to Worson’s claims, his two friends, linen draper Barham Wise and photographer Hamerson Burns challenged him to prove his skills. He was to run non-stop from Leamington to Coventry…a total of 40 miles.
Although Worson had consumed alcohol, he immediately accepted the challenge and began his marathon. His friends followed in a horse-drawn cart, with only a few yards distance between themselves and Worsen.
Worson seemed to be doing well for the first few miles, laughing and joking with his friends as he ran. Then all of a sudden and for no clear reason, Worson stumbled and fell forwards – letting out an unusual and horrifying cry…he then disappeared into thin air.
Horrified by what they had just witnessed, Wise and Burns scrambled from their carriage and searched frantically, but they could not find a sight or sound of their friend.
Wise and Burns rushed to the nearest town and reported their friend’s disappearance, which resulted in a thorough search of the area. However, there was no clue as to Worson’s whereabouts and after an investigation of the area the search was eventually called off. Worson was never seen again…he had simply vanished from our existence.

It almost sounds like he might have fallen into a hole but I am sure it would have been found. Another dominion perhaps? Makes you wonder.
I know, it’s very bizare Pitch, not one of the better ones on strange disappearances. The Anjikuni disappearance is my favourite.
I think the two friends killed him and then made out he had disappeared, that is what sprung to mind, but i hope i’m wrong.
Now that ‘s a horse of a different color. If they did, then they hid the body very well. But I know you are aware of disappearances all the time and nothing is ever found of them. It is a big world with some mysterious things going on and some very bad people.
You know, I remember my grandfather telling me about this. It would have to be this, it sounds too familiar….and I remember he said it was in England.
So many of these stories…..there has to be something to it. I’ve not been much of one for UFO’s but I certainly believe in other dimensions. Are there perhaps vortexes that these people fall through? It really has me wondering.
I am thoroughly enjoying reading of these experiences though. Once again, something to make me wonder just exactly what is out there that can’t be seen.
Well it’s a possibility isn’t it Pitch? Unlike the Anjikuni village people, 2,000 people could not be murdered without leaving any evidence.
They’re great stories aren’t they scary, i’ve enjoyed reading the documents Rebecca supplied and then putting them in my own words.
Murder is a very good possibility but it would seem that the authorities would have been very suspicious of that death or disappearance without a body.
It’s unlikey I understand that, but the possibility is still there. I’m more thinking it is paranormal when i think about it properly.
I got a question. What about cases where people claim to be from another time era. Has that ever occured? I mean, what if one of the cases out of the dozen or more I know exist…what if one of them came back. What if 5 minutes in another dimension is an entire era here. I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it. But maybe someone has. Who knows. Right?
I don’t know much about other time era’s, but that would be good to research and write about Abby.
Sorry taken so long to reply, i’ve been out all weekend
Time travel, Einstein did allow for time travel in his equations, so I wouldn’t put it out of the realm of possibility.
yeah but I mean, what would be interesting is…if one of those people….like this man for instance, lets say he did disappear into thin air. And what if he had come back ?
Oh i see what you mean now Abby, did you see the comment under the Anjikuni village about the boy who came back? I think it was scary who posted that.
I’d love to get some time to read about that and add it to the story, will have to wait until the summer hols are up though, my daughter is wanting to do stuff alllllllllll the time!
hey guys- been a while!
good job ep. i told you you would do a better job than i would!!.
I don’t know I’ve heard of these mysterious disapperences, but I don’t really think the friends killed him, I think really he was sucked into a hole, must of just been the right place at the right time!
hii…. i have read so many of stories of alien abductions or people who disappear without a trace or like the Anjikuni village but this is the first story i have read about a man disappearing in thin air infront of 2 other men. I dont think they killed him ( if they did they di d a good job hiding a body) and i dont think he got sucked into any hole. There is a possilblity that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and just did dissapear, like an alien abdution. You cant tell me that we are the only living things in the whole universe. Mabye he wanted to disappear and this was a just story to cover it
I READ A STORY ABOUT A JUDGE GREEN FROM CHICAGO, IL, USA WHO DISAPPEARED SOMETIME DURING THE 1930′S. THERE WAS REALLY NOTHING REMARKABLE ABOUT THE MAN OTHER THAN HE WAS A JUDGE. HE WAS GIVEN A CASE THAT NO ONE ELSE WANTED, TO TRY AGAINST A MINOR CORRUPT PERSON (I DON’T REMEMBER THE DETAILS), MAYBE A MOBSTER WANNA BE. ANYWAY HE WAS SUPPOSED TO MEET HIS WIFE FOR A CELEBRATORY DINNER. WHEN HE LEFT THE COUTHOUSE IT WAS RAINING AND HE COULDN’T GET A CAB, SO DECIDED TO WALK TO THE RESTUARANT. A LOT OF PEOPLE SAW HIM ALL DAY LONG AND AS HE WAS LEAVING THE BUILDING A LOT OF PEOPLE SPOKE WITH HIM IN PASSING. OUT ON THE STREET SEVERAL PEOPLE RECOGNIZED HIM; HE WAS CHEERFUL AND LOOKING FORWARD TO DINNER. HE WALKED TO THE END OF THE BLOCK AND THAT WAS THE LAST TIME HE WAS EVER SEEN AGAIN. pEOPLE ON THAT SIDE OF THE SWORE THEY NEVER SAW HIM’ MANY KNEW WHO HE WAS AND KNEW HIM ON SITE; THEY ALL SAID THAT THEY HAD NOT SEEN HIM THAT DAY. IT WAS STILL DAYLIGHT, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS CLOUDY. HE MUST HAVE TURNED THE CORNER INTO ANOTHER DEMINSION?, TIME?, PLACE? WHO KNOWS?
It makes you wonder Robbie about all the people that are missing in the world. What really happened to them.
Thanks for that Robbie, people like to forget and try and give a logical answer… maybe they can ,but there is always that possibility of an unkown logical explanation.
I’ve not heard about this, but it makes you think doesn’t?
I live in Leamington, Warwickshire and am very interested in this. One thing that is clearly wrong about this story is the distance, Leamington to Coventry is 10 miles now and back in the day it would certainly have been no more than 15 miles. I’ve looked at my local library at the local paper for the date he was supposed to have gone missing and for a couple of weeks afterwards and nothing came up.
My next step I guess is to look into the parish record to see if this guy existed…..
Thanks Rich, that would be great if you could find out if it’s just a legend or is the truth.
Robbie,
The missing judge was Judge Crater. He disappeared mid-day in lower Manhattan, in 1930, after leaving the federal courthouse there. A pedestrian claimed to have seen Crater stepping into the back seat of a sedan. He was never seen again. This tale is very well-documented, and can be googled or wikipedia’d. New York papers followed this story for years. Very little was pieced together. I do not remember rightly any solid conclusion, but it was believed he was murdered. Some personal items were found many years later on some private property. An interesting memorable footnote…. The widow found $5000 cash in her dresser, placed atop her daily-use clothes a day after reporting her husband missing. That is equivalent to $120,000 today.
Documentation is at the core of verifying disappearances. Warson’s disappearance had to have genreated some documentation at the time. As with the Inuit village disappearance, the local constabulary woud be the authoritative answer.
I’m always fascinated by phenomena science cannot satisfactorily explain. I’ve heard about the James Worson case while researching Oliver Larch and David Lang. Like those two, the credibility of the Worson account is suspect. Again, this could also include the theory of “void spots of universal ether” which was mentioned around the time of Orion Williamson’s disappearance in 1854 (another puzzler). This concept has also been applied to a series of mysterious disappearances in Bennington Vermont in the vicinity of Glastonbery Mountain. I believe that about four people vanished there between the 1946 and 1950 time frame. Who knows? Maybe there are some subjects we’re not meant to know but to merely marvel at.
I recommend Wikipedia for referencing many of the subjects discussed on this site. The David Lang tale is considered a hoax. Acording to Wikipedia, investigators could not find any family members to corroborate the disappearance. I remember reading the tale over 40 years ago in Frank Herbert’s “Strangest of All”. As discussed before on this page, Herbert is now widely discredited by legitimate rersearchers in the paranormal field.
The disappearances around Bennington, Vermnont 6 decades ago has great potential. It is little-known and if there is a police record it could make a rich story for a good detective-at-heart. As pointed out before, verification is crucial. Even the skeptical research site http://www.snopes.com lists some tales of the paranormal as “multiple truth values”, i.e. possible.
When I can’t find any reason for something like disappearing into then air, I consider even the absurd. Consider this, let all of us imagine a spider living underground, as the kind I’m thinking of, just can’t recall the name. The spider constructs a “trap door” that it can quickly open and then close once they have caught the prey. I’d scream at the sight of something like that. After catching its prey the door is pulled shut again. All of this kind of talk reminds me of Vincent Price, and a host of other scary movies.
Now, honestly which is more scary, a giant trap door spider or falling into some other reality? I think the “other dimension” would be easier to deal with, unless of course I discovered mankind is not at the top of the food chain.
Well it would definately be the spider and the trap door for me!! ekkkkk!! that i would avoid that is!
The David Lang disappearnce solved! According to another site, famous 19th century American writer and raconteur Ambrose Bierce was fascinated with the Orion Williamson tale, and wrote a short atory in the 1880s based on the Williamson disappearance. The location was changed to Tennessee and name to David Lang. Bierce himself later disappeared mysteriously from his beautiful home in the Napa Valley of California. It is believed he was killed in the Mexican Revolution.
Oh wow, so he basically copied Willamson tale!
I stumble across this story while looking for music downloads, and has got me interested in it.
I see everyone came with a logical story to why(maybe murder, make up tales due to facts not corresponding) and a science one( different dimension, wormhole, time travel) so im going to look at a supernatural side.
The area james worson was running was in a forest and the united kindom(england, scotland, and ireland) are known for the stories of the(get this) the Fae,which in pratical terms, fairys. It is a long stretch ,but reading about folklore in that area of the world is like reading the encyclopedia of fairys. and i’ve read those of people suddening vanishing in the forest not to be heard about again.so i tried to get other informations of other dissappearance in the area and in surrounding villages but was denied, since im in south america, and not a official of some sort.so if anyone would like to read more about the fae, this website contains a wide variet of the fae and other subjects.
There’s another strange disappearance from America, the man was called, Orion Williamson, this is told on this site Ancient Watcher.
Hmm Fae seem to pop up all over this website atm

Maybe time for a feature on Fae XD
I had this book about spooky documentations of cases in england, all these weird facts, mysterious disappearance and even spontaneous human combustion (ever heard of that? That one’s cool).. Well, james worson’s in the book, and it is written there that there was a photograph showing his footprints faltering and stopping dead.. I wanted to see it..
Did it show the photograph of James Worson in the book Roy?
Yes i’ve heard of human combustion, i should do an article on that.
This subject is facinating to me. I’m going to have to do further research on this subject. Ok that said. Now i have something else to worry about…Poltergeists, black shuck, shadow people, black eyed children. Now i have to worry about slipping into another dimension.
Thanks EP:-)
On the other hand if i slipped into the 4th dimension, at least i`d get away from my girlfriend. Ok i`m game, were`s the nearest portal?
This is a fictional story, based on a work by Ambrose Bierce.
See this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Unfinished_Race
Thanks for the link, which i just read. It’s just presumed it ‘could’ be fictional, but whether it’s fact or fiction isn’t certain.
The David Lang tale is definitely a hoax, based on a short story by Mr. Bierce, who was fascinated by the tale of Orion Williamson’s disaappearance. Mr. Worson’s disappearance was well-documented as was Mr. Williamsons’s. Those are the only two documented cases know of witnessed disappearances I am aware of.
This story was later debunked and proved to be fictional.
True or not there’s been many reports of people disappearing while witnesses were present. But with a God awful name like that he might have just ran off
After reading several stories on this topic, I’ve become a little bit more skeptical. Consider this possibility, a large creature living in the ground bores tunnels. These tunnels might come near other tunnels like their own.
Someone thinking they are on solid ground findout real quick that the surface was only dirt about three feet thick. The surface will fall apart with the right amount of weight bearing upon it.
This sort of thing would happen to me occassionally, as I was growing up. However, there is a fatal flaw to my hypothesis. There should be a visible hole on the surface. Did anyone ever see one of these holes?
I’m just fishing for some sort of explanation.
There should be a hole on the surface after they fell into it, or maybe the hole filled in after the person fell in, from dirt round the sides. I suppose that is possible isn’t it?
I read Skeptic’s Wikipedia link. So the James Worson tale may well be based on another Bierce tale. Unless there are any constabulary records of the event in 1873, we must consider this tale another hoax. Bierce was obsessed with death and the unexplained. I have one of his books of short stories. Many tales take place during the American Civil War(Bierce was a veteran), and end with some message from the other side. Recommended reading!
What’s the book called JHC?
