Sleep Paralysis

SLEEP PARALYSIS

succ1

IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT

Regardless of whether one accepts the medical explanation, or the paranormal theory for this surprisingly common condition, there is no escaping the fact that it is a terrifying experience for the sufferer.

Sleep paralysis is closely related to the natural paralysis occurring in the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) state of sleep. The victim is fully conscious and alert, yet the body remains paralysed. In this state, the brain is capable of manifesting intensely vivid hallucinations, which the body cannot react to. The understandable reaction to this scenario is fear and panic. To the sufferer, the experience is terrifyingly real. All the natural senses of the individual remain fully functioning, i.e. smell, taste, touch, hearing, and sight are all present and only add to the horror.

During REM sleep the body’s metabolism is slowed down, the heart rate is lowered, as too is blood pressure and respiratory rate. Along with this comes muscle paralysis; all these adaptations are a safety mechanism to prevent injury during the dreaming state. Without this natural defence, the individual could thrash out with limbs and enact their dreams.

With a reduced heart beat and respiratory rate the victim will experience the feeling of pressure on the chest wall and a difficulty in breathing. In this natural state of fear and panic, the victim may well interpret this sensation as some kind of weight on his/her chest.

Some victims of this horrifying condition are able to convince themselves that the experience was no more than a dream – a nightmare at worst. Others remain convinced they have been attacked by a supernatural entity. The latter are adamant their assailant is an external reality and not a product of their subconscious. However, sleep specialists and psychologists dismiss this by explaining that thoughts, images, and sensations released from an individual’s subconscious are all ultimately alien to the individual. This area is a vast storeroom for random psychological phenomena, which the conscious brain either cannot, or will not analyse and accept as reality. Hence, the victim concludes that all the hallucinatory elements of a sleep paralysis attack are received from an external source.

Throughout the world and the passing of time, the above physiological aspects of sleep paralysis have been and remain the same, regardless of the victim’s race, religion, or culture. It is the almost countless interpretations of these symptoms, which make sleep paralysis one of, if not the most common and feared paranormal phenomena.

It is beyond the scope and capability of this article and its author to cover all the physiological and psychological aspects of sleep paralysis. Therefore, I have elected to turn my attention to offering the reader a brief overview of the many variations and interpretations of the occult aspects of this fascinating and terrifying phenomenon.

THE DARKER SIDE OF THE NIGHT

Frank De Felitta’s novel, ‘The Entity’ which was later made into a very successful horror movie was in fact based on the alleged true story of Carlotta Moran, a young Californian woman. Her terrifying ordeal from the 1970s is supported by psychiatric reports and physical evidence in the form of bruises to her body. Some researchers claim that Carlotta was attacked by a non-physical male entity known as an Incubus, (female counterpart, Succubus).

There are several excellent books and papers available on sleep paralysis. ‘Creatures from Inner Space’ (Stan Gooch) and ‘The Flying Cow’ (Guy Lyon Playfair), and ‘The Terror that comes in the Night’ (David J. Hufford) are just three examples.

SLEEP PARALYSIS IN FOLKLORE:

The following list is a brief summary of various perceptions of sleep paralysis in some cultures throughout the world:

African culture describes sleep paralysis as ‘The Witch Riding Your Back’.

Cabbodian, Laitian, and Thai culture believe sleep paralysis to be ‘Pee Umm’ and Khmout Sukkhot’. These describe dreams of ghostly figures holding down their victims, or merely being nearby. Both terms should not be confused with ‘Pee Khao’ and ‘Khamout Jool’ which refers to a ghost possession.

Hmong culture refers to sleep paralysis as ‘Dab Tsog’ or ‘Crushing demon’ In this instance the victim claims to see small child-sized entities sitting on their chests.

Many Americam Hmong, (mainly male) have died in their sleep, prompting the Centres for Disease Control to adopt the term, ‘Sudden Unexpected Nocturnal Death Syndrome’, or (SUNDS).

Viatnamese culture refer to sleep paralysis as ‘Ma De’, meaning (held down by a ghost or, ‘Bong De’, (held down by a shadow’.

Chinese culture believes it to be, ‘Pinyin; gui y ashen’ or ‘Pinyin gui ya chan’. Translated: ‘Ghost pressing on bed’.

Japanese culture, as ‘Kanashibari’, meaning (bound or fastened in metal).

Hungarian culture folklore refers to sleep paralysis as ‘Lidercnymias’. (Lideric pressing). Here the term can relate to a number of supernatural entities like ‘Lideric’ (Wraith). ‘Boszorkany’ (Witch). ‘Tunder’ (Fairy) or ‘Ordogszereto’ (Demon Lover). The word ‘Boszorkany’ stems from the Turkish root ‘Bas’ meaning (to press).

Icelandic culture refers to sleep paralysis as having a ‘Mara’ (Devil that sits on one’s chest at night).

Malta culture attributes sleep paralysis to an attack by the ‘Haddiela’ who is the wife of ‘Hares’. To help prevent such an attack Maltese people believe to rid themselves of Haddeila, they must place a piece of silverware or a knife under the pillow just before sleep.

Kurdish culture believes it to be ‘Mattaka’. Kurdish people believe the form of a  ghost or evil spirit visits them in the night and suffocates them if they have done something bad.

New Guinea culture, as ‘Suk Ninmyo’. Here the origin is from sacred trees that use human essence to sustain their lives. These trees feed on human essence during the night so as not to disturb the human’s daily life.

Turkish culture, as ‘Karabasan’, (The dark presser/assailer).

Mexican culture refer to sleep paralysis as ‘Se me Subio el Mureto’ (The dead person got on me).

Southern American culture refers to the phenomenon as a ‘hag’ and it is believed to be a sign of an approaching tragedy or accident.

Southwest Nigeria culture describes sleep paralysis as ‘Ogun Oru’ (Nocturnal Warfare).

Pakistani culture refers to the phenomenon as encounters with evil jinns and demons. They believe the experience to be the result of enemies performing black magic.

Korean culture, as ‘Ga-ui-nool-lim’ menaing (pressed by a nightmare).

Tamail and Sri Lankan cultures refer to sleep paralysis as ‘Amuku Be’ or Amuku Pei’ meaning (the ghost that forces one down).

Malay culture, as ‘Kena Tindih’ meaning (being pressed).

Newfoundland culture refers to the phenomenon as the ‘Old Hag’. It is believed that the Hag can be summoned to attack a third-party, like a curse. Daviv J. Hufford stated in his 1982 book, ‘The Terror That Comes in the Night’ that believers call up the Hag by reciting the Lords Prayer backwards.

Because of the complexity and the profound effect this phenomenon can have on many people’s lives I intend to return to this topic in future articles when information from reliable sources becomes available.

  1. Handsome Harry says:

I Believe it is a natural mind phenomena, when i had my Old Hag Attack, i was dreaming and then after a sudden realisation in the dream it became lucid and i woke up, all that mental transistion must cause some effect on the mind and Sleep Paralysis must be the result!

  2. Wayne,

great article and filled with facts.

What Handsome Harry says makes sense too

Although I have never suffered with sleep paralysis, I do believe that what you say in your article here and I quote you, “With a reduced heart beat and respiratory rate the victim will experience the feeling of pressure on the chest wall” this is a great explanation I am sure alot of people hadn’t realised before.

I do know that certain victims of sleep paralysis feel an evil presence around them. I would like to know how this can be explained in scientific terms.

  3. Liderien says:

    Hi!
When I was 18, I first experienced sleep paralysis. I did not understand what had happended to me and I chalked it up to demons. I had another experience at the age of 21, only this time worse. It wasnt until a few years ago that I finally got some information on the happenings. My only question is…why do people always dream up demons and bad entities? Is it because of the pressure on the chest? Just curious on other peoples’ thoughts. Needless to say, the events that took place scared the crap out of me. I fought the paralysis and was able to break it, as I am sure most do.
    I love information…great topic!

I totally believe that there is a scientific explanation for many occurrences of sleep paralysis. But, I am also convinced that not all of them are scientific, lot’s of them are supernatural attacks. Maybe it’s the proven fact that the body is in a sort of “helpless” state that makes us more vulnerable to demonic attacks during those periods.

I have experienced something similar to sleep paralysis and in one instance, I had a complete mental conversation with the evil entity standing before me. No one could ever convince me that this was not a supernatural attack.

  5. Liderien,

I’m glad this article of Wayne’s has been of help to you. Nice to see you again by the way :) How are you?

    Coco,

I know of someone in particular who states there was a definate evil entity involved with their sleep paralysis, although Wayne has given great information for most who suffer with this, there is still other’s who will not be satisfied.

I wonder if you could share that conversation you had. If you would like to email it to me, i can add it as a seperate post, if you wish.

Thank you for your comment. You do raise a very good point in your question. To my understanding, and I stress an understanding based on available information and not any personal experience of sleep paralysis.
During the state of paralysis it is the subconscious side of the human psyche that has predominant control, as a result of this the ability of the brain to analyse the situation is restricted as the information it is receiving is not logical in normal conditions, it therefore substitutes alternative false logic in an effort to explain what is happening. These substitutions can be in the form of hallucinations, of a visual, auditory or sensory nature. I hope this brief reply is of some interest to you.

    CoCo
May I also thank you for your comment and add that it is my honest opinion that the scientific theory I refer to in this article answers many questions for me. May I stress that I in no way disbelieve, nor disrepect the validity of unique knowledge from those who have been unfortunate enough to fall victim to whilst experiencing this terrible phenomenum.

  7. Liderien says:

But even illogical hallucinations and the like are not always to the negative. Such as in dream state, are not always nightmares, or when staying up for days does not always constitute negative visions. Could there be a link between the first initial thought (in creating the “demon” entity) because of the fact that we feel pressure on the chest similiar to that of being held captive and helpless…therefore turning our “illogical hallucinations” to the negative. From what I understand of the subconscious, is not really illogical. Merely lacks the bounds of the natural. There is still some thought that is not out of possiblity. What we fear in hallucinations are the same things we fear in the conscious.

    Liderien
May I begin by saying, I find your comments to this article fascinating. They are inspiring me to look at the origins and effects of sleep paralysis in a whole new light. Your explanation of “illogical hallucinations” does sound more than feasable to me.

I add my next statement with some caution, as I don’t wish to over-simplify a very complex chain of psychological and physiological events and effects; therefore, I “suggest” the following, rather than proclaim it as a definitive answer.

As I said earlier in the article, I have no personal experience of a sleep paralysis attack. However, I have had a series of heart attacks and are familiar with the very similar adverse chest reactions as a result. During these attacks I had no inclination to link these sensations to any supernatural source. In a fully conscious state, I (rightly or wrongly) assumed that brain reacted to the situation by increasing the amount of adrenalin and other homones to help cope with the situation. However, in the case of sleep paralysis, where the victim is either ‘in’, or rapidly plucked ‘from’ REM sleep and the bodies metabolism has been slowed down considerably, could it not be possible that the production of adrenalin and associate hormones is also restricted and could result in a different psychological effect to a physiological cause?

Thank you once again for your thought inspiring comments.

  9. Liderien says:

Thank you for the comments :) . What I find completely interesting is the fact that, in this state of mind, your conscious is engaged; when you wake and find your physical body unable to respond to brain impulses of movement and the like, yet your brain is in full capacity of function in thought. It is my understand, in having this experience, that the only thing you cannot do at this point is move or speak, everything else is fully conscious. So, the only logical explaination of the lack of ability to physically move, is that you must be under some kind of external invisible power. Because you feel pressure, but you know that it is not a physical person “sitting” on you, as you cannot “feel” physical contact, though the “pressure” feels external. So it is the only “logical” explaination to your current state. What happens after that is the run of the “imagination”?
The last experience I had with this “condition” was the breath in my ear and the evil laugh. I did not talk to the entity for two reasons,
one…I was busy calling out the name of the Lord to free me from my state,
and two, I did not think he could hear me.
But that might be because of education (religious). As I believe that satan cannot read our minds. And it was my plan to be freed and confront the “entity” after I gained full capacity of all senses.

What I also find interesting is that pretty much the entire human race all have similiar experiences and give claim to demonic entities regardless of race, creed, religion, age, etc. I would so love to know why. Because enquiring minds want to know :) .

There is some fantastic information in this article, i am going to copy this and print it off. Thankyou.

  11. Marcelo Nogales says:

MMM… this is a good explanation for this phenomenom, since I’ve suffered it…. but the courious thing is that when i sleep at day, I’ve never never ever experienced the sleep paralisys….. only at night…..
that’s why I’m still scared jajaja

  12. Marcelo,

this is what so many say, so how can that be? this is why it is considered paranormal…lots of people swear their sleep paralysis is more than this explanation.

What happens to you? do you see, feel or what? you never did say what your experience is like? We would be most grateful to share.

  13. nick says:

this happens to me atleast once a month.its as if i move in slow motion .a very scary thing i must say,but it dosnt stop me from sleeping.

  14. Tony says:

I had multiple episodes last night. It was VERY scary. I think what triggered it for me was watching too many ghost hunting shows. I was thinking about that stuff when I went to sleep and I couldn’t fall asleep for about 2-3 hours. When I did fall asleep, it wasn’t long before I came aware and was paralyzed. I had full body contractions and it was terrifying. I tried to scream out…and couldn’t eventually I relaxed and re-entered sleep. I did this about 3-4 times last night. I only got about 2 hours of sleep. I’m hoping a sleep-aid will help.

  15. Hi Tony

I had my first encounter with SP about 3 weeks ago, i posted it in a mates forum, it was terrible like you explained, only i had one attack of it. I’ll go and find it and post it in here.

  16. Hi Tony,

here is my experience as it was written at the time…

I think it was three mornings ago this happened, I can’t be sure now as the days have been strange lately. I spoke to Karen who comes on this site about my experience, this is what i told her:

I woke up quite late in the morning for me, I think it was around 9 or 10 am, but I can’t be certain as I didn’t check my watch. As i opened my eyes, i realised i couldn’t move a muscle. I was COMPLETELY paralysed. I remember feeling very panicked and felt sure i was about to see something horrible. I tried to cry out, but couldn’t do this either. As my eyes looked around the room, the atmosphere was hazy looking, why that should be i don’t know, but it was. The room was light as my curtains are thin and let almost all the daylight in.

I became aware that my dog who always sleeps with me was noticing something was wrong. This is when I realised for sure this was happening for real and I wasn’t in a dream like state. He started crawling up the bed towards the pillows, but i still couldn’t move. This all lasted for about 10 or 12 seconds.

I know people who have suffered sleep paralysis before and have stated that they have felt a pressure on their chest, but I didn’t feel that, just the paralysis.

This happened very briefly the following morning, but this time only lasted about 2 seconds.

  17. lee says:

I to suffer from sleep paralysis, it started about 6 months after losing my partner tragically and suddenly. My experience has been different at certain times first time I could have sworn I was awake and heard a noise in corner of room but could not see anything suddenly I felt the pressure and then a deafening surging, gurgling sound in my ears, my attacks have become more frequent now sometimes occurring within minutes of eachother, although recently I have realised I am dreaming often calling out to my son or trying to crawl to get away only to awaken with the pressure and symptons as above but not have moved from my bed I hence put it down to night terrors which I admit I know really nothing about and like previous comment I to say lords prayer over and over. Previous to this site I had never heard of this condition but I must say I dont know if Im more scared or relieved. I would appreciate some feedback. thanks

  18. Anonymous says:

I have been researching this since I learned about the term sleep paralysis. My first episode was 25 yars ago. I awoke and couldn’t move from my bed . I was very scared and kept trying to tell myself that this was a dream.. I eventially was able to get out of my bed and was going to go to my parents room, but I was “frozen” at the door. I tried to scream, but nothing was coming out of my mouth. I don’t remember how long it was until I was able to move, but when I was released from this state, I turned my light switch on and got back into bed . I fell asleep immediately. When I awoke in the morning, my light was still on. I have told few people because I know this sounds strange. I
I have had several uneventful episodes of sleep paralysis over the years, where there was no fear involved. But last week, I had a terrible experience. I awoke and I couldn’t move.

  19. This is fascinating and i would love to talk to you further on this mainly because sleep paralysis is usually associated where you cannot move from your position whilst sleeping…you got up and went to the door. This is very interesting.

Talk to me more on this please!

  20. Mina says:

I sleep light and a yr ago I felt three deep steps into my children’s bedroom. This “someone” is very tall, although I saw no one I felt the floor move and heard the steps. I was sleeping on my right side next to my two boys and thought it was my husband checking on us. It was 2:42 am. Another time (it seems to happen once a month around the 16th 17th when the moon is waning. someone woke me up by pushing my hip (I was again on my right side) I felt the pressure of a hand. It was the same bedroom, not anyone I could see. The 16th at 3:42 am I laid on the floor on a sleeping bag as my children and I were playing and everyone took a corner and fell asleep. In my sleep I could see myself and the children and I also saw 3 espectros. two had no legs only one was walking in the same room they entered after the three big steps shook the room with every step. These three espectros rushed in the bedroom and held me down (I was on my right side) making my left arm num from the pressure on my arm cutting blood circulation I could not move nor scream. For a quarter of a minute I was able to get up and followed them to the front door which was wide open. I called my husband and we both witnessed the door know become unlocked a second time. All of a sudden I was in the sleeping bag and nothing was out of the ordinary except my arm was totally dead asleep. I was so frightened and after calling a blessing in the name of Christ, I was in peace because I had not done anything to deserve evil. I was able to fall a sleep again. The next day I nearly burned the house down by accidentally leaving the stove on full blast. It was a warning of a tragedy and my peacefull thinking after the fact of a horrible nightmare (I would like to think) saved my house and everything in it. My thoughts are just like the description above this espectros do foretell you of an approching tragedy. Does anybody remember something bad happening the next day, or within the following days? I have also had astral accidental trips. I do not know how I do that but I loved it. I am sure I was lucky to not be disturbed this time but I must learn to protect myself before I take off. Does anybody have any suggestions?

  21. Thank you Mina,

that is very freaky, i do have a thing which happened to me also about sleep paralysis and also something which i recall in a dream which seemed like i was being warned. I will get the link

  22. candycane says:

Okay one thing i REALLY dont get is…

I accept that there is most likely a scientific explanation buttttttt
with me i dont sleep and then find myself paralised unable to talk and hullucinating…
even if im not sleep, i lie down and then all of a sudden my body begins to get paralised but my eyes are fine, i was paralised but able to move at the same time, i felt a ball trying to get out of my throat it was like a ball of evil lol
i then sat up, and heard a bee pass by and then that was it
    i went to sleep.

Ever since that had happened, i went to church and i was sitting down and i felt my right arm being paralised … and also when im having dinner with my family i all of a sudden can’t move and then i snap out of it… and the really creepy bit… i can feel that evil ball that was trying to get out of my throat in my stomach alllllll the time 24/7. Put it this way, even in my sleep im aware of it, and sometimes i feel it coming up my throat

So yeah maybe it is a sleep paralysis but why does it affect my everyday life ?

  23. I agree Candy, i suffered Sleep paralysis not long ago and it is a very frightening experience. I didn’t have it half as bad as you, so i can just imagine the terror you suffer from continually, you poor girl.

I don’t think scientific explanations can always explain SP away. The person who wrote this article changed his mind on a lot of things which scientists claim and so you have my support here Candy, and i;m sure many others who are on here willl try and help you.

First thing though, have you prayed about this as if it is evil, you need to start working on getting this away from you. Let me know and i’ll talk to others about this too for you. Take care :)

  24. Mina says:

    To Candycane:

I would try to help if I knew how….I feel frustrated that you are still going through this. It sounds to me and this is only me speaking, that something has attached to you. Have you been at a party where others or even you played with the oija board or dared darkness?
I have gone to the Catholic Church and gotten Holly Water and Blessed that bedroom at least once a year. We now call this bedroom the Crusifix bedroom because of the amount of them. I think Candy, that you need someone to help…..someone who knows what they are doing and not make it worse. Also Psycologically you could be doing it worse. So speak about it at church and let yourself be blessed. Take care.
To eyepriestiess: Do you recall what happened the next day? or what the event was that you escaped?

  25. It’s horrible hearing this isn’t it Mina, but your advice is very good advice, so you helped much more than you realised.

I often ask that question, have you been near a ouija board, or around any others who have.

Mine was SP i think, but i can’t be certain. The next day i just felt drained from it, it happened again for a couple of secs and i felt worried what was going to happen next, but nothing did.

I’m going to keep hoping that Candy is going to be able to get the right help here, we’ll be here for you! :)

  26. candycane says:

thanks guys, thanks for your replys, i have never used a oija board i would be stuped and too scared to mess with that stuff but may i ask what you meant by *dared darkness* MINA* ? im not too sure about that, but like i have tarot cards they are unicorn type ones which are pretty looking ones which i never use i just chucked under my bed really.

years ago i used to dream about me being in a church and demon posessed figures crawling all over the church and i would just pray and wake up to find a evil looking man standing in front of me he didnt do much..just stood there really, and i saw this man every night at the exact same time and i would break out in sweat and when i was lying down somethign whispered something in my ear it sounded evil, creepy i dont know what he said though. Then once i was about to sleep and it felt as though my soulso badly wanted to come out of my body my mind said let it go but my heart said no in the end i just said to myself this is not real then it went.

when i stopped at my friends house on the first night my friend told me that a man that killed himself talks to him and wanted his help… i just laughed and took the mick out of the man and said he wasn’t real, the next day we all went to the pub and like i felt angry and snapped at everybody that night im not sure why but i felt so angry i wanted to actually stab my own friend but i never understood why so i just went back to my mates where i was saying…then i understood why … i was in the room and all of a sudden i burst into tears saying things like why is this happening to me its not fair im so upset…then i stopped crying and thought what am i saying why am i crying? then something said to me HELP ME! and i just said no then the idiot spirit tried to get inside me i couldnt breath then i just asked for jesus help and i got out the house…i never went back to that house

Now i’m always scared to be alone in my own house i’m not sure why, most of it is deffinately due to me being scared of past experiences i convince my self something is in the room but other times i really think theres something there.

This sleep paralysis thing is just the ice-ing on the cake im so annoyed i think to myself why does this spirit world want to come to me to torture me? my sisters dont really believe in jesus my mum doesnt either and my step dad deffinately doesnt, i’m the only one and sometimes i think so myself maybe they only torture me because i’m the one that has an open mind and believes this stuff and believes in god…

my mum has tried so many things to get rid of it…but fails

hummm well i’m off to church tommorow anyways but i can not bring myself to talk to anybody about this thing because its strange and its been happening for so long that i kind of given up…i even think to myself jesus is not real because he doesnt help me, aparrently he’s *always with us* but somehow i think to myself hummm is he really ?

anyways this sleep paralise hasnt happened for 2 days now so im sooo happy, but im sure theres a scientfic explanation as well as paranormal…

    thanx

  27. eyepriestess says:

    Candy,

use the Arc Angel Micheal prayer, he is the slayer of demons, here it is:

    “Saint Michael the Archangel,
    defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
    by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
    Amen”

Also, Candy, tarot cards are another so called harmless occult game, please get rid of them, a friend of mine had problems with tarot cards. They are games of the occult and attract evil.

Good luck and God bless you Candy, i am going to pray for you!

  28. candycane says:

yeah i call for him in time of need anyways he doesnt do much lol. im going to get rid of my tarot cards do i just bin them ? or burn them or something ?

by the way i havent had any more problems when im sleeping just the occasional spirit blowing in my ears but nothing im really affraid of the sleep paralysis has like dissapeared and i dont reli feel my body paralyising any more wahooo so i rekon alot of it was scientific come to think of it but like my imagination was running wild i reckon i think because of what happened in the past drove me mad lol i think i badly wanted to believe its something supernatural but i dont think it is i just think i imagined it all i mean its too weird to bleve lol

    thanx anyways x

  29. Hi Candy,
I believe if you get rid of the tarot then you will find a big difference.

God is always with you, you are sometimes just not aware of how much he is protecting you. If you hadn’t God’s faith then imagine how much worse these incidents could be.

I don’t always think SP is scientific at all! I’m on your side there and i know someone else who would agree that what you are experiencing could be paranormal.

If you need any one to talk to further on this, if you go onto my home page, there is a great forum with lovely people in there, who you can chat to whenever you wish Candy.

  30. Mina says:

    To Candycane:
By “dare darkness” I mean that sometimes people hear others tell stories or personal experiences or for fun they might go in a cementary or play ouija board and basically laugh and dare death or spirits and say they are not afraid of them and invoking, asking them to show themselves to you and manifest movement of some kind. When several people are together in a circle or hold hands for instance. There no doubt that different dimentions exist but it is not good to believe in them. If we hear of them then be afraid and protective of your soul because God gave us something to guard better than our own life and that is your own soul. Our soul is not something we can dispose of or give it away to no one. We will go back to God and if we do not have our soul to use as a highway then how will you know how to go back to heaven? You would be lost. Protect your soul and if we are not strong enough to handle the different dimentions called paranormal…….then let’s not watch the horror movies, read the occult books or dare evil….because it is outhere! lurking! taking every depressed person who thinks his/her life is all he/she has to loose.
Then again….. there are some of us who do nothing dareing yet these spirits in need of help ….who have lost their highway to heaven (soul) look for the living person with the skill to see them to help them. If you happen to be one ot them……then don’t be scared……. hold on to your seat because you will see horrible things that are not currently there yet you must soak yourself and learn more so you can help…..and it seems like when you see these spirits or dead people …..well pretty much you have no other choice but to go forward….other than that you will think you are crazy and go crazy. Yes there is only a handfull of people you can open up to and tell what you are going through. You must be careful if you want to keep your social life intact. When I said go to church and talk about it, well I meant go to the Catholic Church because they probably are the only church that has had the highest level of incidents talked to about this. I don’t know why I say that…….. but when I get holy water, It has to be from the Catholic Church and the Catholic Church is not the Church I attend to when I go to Church. Well, about the Tarot Cards….. eyepriestess is right. When we read cards like that, I have heard there is a spirit standing by next to us playing these …….. (what we see as an innocent game) cards. Tarot cards envoke. Candy were those cards given to you or did you buy them? Apparently there is a difference. And about discarding them, well there is a way of doing that! But do not burn them! I would ask the church. I had a friend whose sister had the ability to read tarot cards, but all she could tell/see was the tragedies, bad things happening (nothing possitive) her standing spirit was something else. Well, I am so relieved to hear you haven’t had an SP incident since. I am sure you have already done something different in your thinking or in your life that has changed that and now you can not change back. Candy please don’t let it change back! You have the power and the will to change what happens to you and if it still happens to you then you will have the ability to change the way you feel about it (scared if you have done something bad or NOT scared if you owe no one anything because you are a good person and nothing can hurt a good, innocent soul). Sometimes God needs a few souls to show others here on Earth that only God has the power of healing and those souls’ only job is to stick to prayer and God’s will. All of us around that soul learn. God has a destination and a job for each of us when we are born. If you happen to be God’s warrior helping against these praying souls, then you will see horrible things you must get used to and you must learn to protect yourself from these things trying to take momentaneous possession and all we need to not learn protection then they might possess indefinitely, and that is when people we know start acting differently and talk differently.

By the way I have “Fairy Cards” I bought several months ago. These are inspirational. I pull three cards once a month and I read about affirmations bringing my possitive view of life and things to do to over come any difficulties or obsticles if I happen to encounter any. They enrich my life for example: by asking me to listen music, or keeping busy doing art, etc. I am asked to repeat affirmations that help me feel better through the day. I read these cards once a month. Write the affirmation I believe will help me most on a post it and stick it on my mirror which I read everyday. I enjoy the inspirational reading because it helps me love myself and if you love yourself then you are willing to help others. I keep them in a purple with gold fabric bag so the energy and knowledge stays within.

ohhh mina that is what you meant, ive never really been to a place where people are burried just for fun, i mean im 19 years old im not a silly kid that would even dare to do that, i’ve never really done anything like that, i’ve never really watched scarey movies for ages, i sometimes think about hell and wonder if i could go there, but i wouldnt say that i call for evil that’s creepy. I still dont get why they would bother me i guess i mean it’s calmed down a bit but i know this calm period is temporary ‘im just wondering what they want with me.

I personally wouldnt agree when you say that you believe that a catholic church would deal with these sort of cases alot more, because majority of churches deal with this sorts of things that i know of but i understand what u mean, my church does this sort of stuff but ive onli just started going church again soooo im not going to feel conftable yet to say whats been happening i just want the timing to be right for me i guess.

but i thought you said all tarot cards are bad ? so does that mean your cards are good but my unicorn ones are bad lol im soo confused now x

  33. Candy, the implication of the game draws negative energy, and therefore gives negative vibes. The best i can give you this as an example is if you read what happened to me, i’ll come back with the link to my story…brb

  34. Here is my story, the game of ouija or other games give the same result i have researched this, this is what happened to me: http://www.worldmysteriesandtrueghosttales.com/the-dangers-of-ouija-boards/

  35. candycane says:

hay mina. the evil stuff came into my life years and years ago way before i got the cards so i dout its from them, maybe the cards do make it a tiny bit worse but i can confirm that its not caused by that they were deffo there before i got the cards x

  36. candycane says:

hay mina i read your storey its well scared so i had to skip some bits lol just so i dont have nighmares lol but like i already knew not to ever mess with that stuff ive never used a ouiji board in my life and never will.

  37. Mina says:

To Candycane: It depends on your mental state. I am sorry if I implied your Unicorn cards were bad. I am trying to probably understand why this sort of things happen so strongly to some of us than others……but I am at a dead end. That is why is called Paranormal. I am sure your unicorn cards are innocent as well. All churches are good! I learn a lot everyday! Yet I strongly believe others are more open to this sort of things than others, maybe not. I am not bias to one doctor …….When I am sick I move around to different alternatives to try and cure a syntom…… I know candy that yours is not a syntom…. but going to Church is very good.
To eyepriestess: I was about to ask you about your experience. I will read it next.

  38. candycane says:

Mina that’s the thing though im not trying to say that tarot cards or games like that are all good and i dont have a negative side to them… but i dont really know why im talking about this because this thing with me started way before i got the cards. I got rid of the cards now anyway, but i’ve never played with a board game to contact spirits or done anything like that… so i dont realy know why im going into this, the negative spirits around me was deffo caused by something else but deffo not what you are saying thanks anyways

  39. Mina says:

To Candycane: I also do not own the “Healing with the Fairies Cards” any more. Candy would you write about it here whenever this happens to you again? And write it down on a calendar as to what nights this happens and at what time. Pay close attention to when these events happen more pronouncedly like when the moon is waning (meaning when the moon has past full moon and is going down). In my calendar I have written the 13th through the 16th nights at around 2:40 am to 3:45 am. About you not playing with the dark Ouija or anything else, you could probably be a “Sensitive” You might have the same need I have which is to learn how to protect ourselves. I must buy a book or something that teaches that! I know you do an imaginary gold ring of light around you and tie an imaginary gold thread to your body so you are able to comeback. Let me see…..Body, Spirit and Soul or is it Body, Soul, Spirit ……. I can’t remember but I have to use the Spirit as my gold thread /highway to come back to which several entities will attach to and if I do not have the strong fearless character to order them off my gold thread then don’t try it. Gosh! I heard this as a small child from a very experienced Medium who would take Astral Trips…. I was too young then ….. to wouldn’t know what questions to ask him then. That Medium Person has passed on. He was also a VERY GOOD DOCTOR. He would sleep days and consult people at night. Strange! if I think of it —- He was already very old when I learned about him and got to meet him in company of my parents one night at 2:00 am in Monterrey, Mexico. We miss him and all his wise knowledge!

  40. Sorry it took so long to let your comment through Mina, i’ve been out all day.

I have had quite a few sleep paralysis attacks, im 32 years of age and i first encountered sleep paralysis when i was about 26 and it was one of the scariest moments iv had in my life. I awoke about 4am and as your article states it felt like something was pushing down on my chest. I could only take short sharp breaths and i was convinced there was a female ghostly figure holding me down. My girlfriend was asleep at the side of me and i can remember trying to turn my head to her and attempting to shout her name out which was to no avail. I also remember trying to move my hand desperatly trying to grab hers to get her attention and ask for help. I have never belived in ghosts but at that moment in time i was certain that there was something else in the room. Im not sure how long i was in this state for but i came out of the trance like state very suddenly and jolted up with some relief but still in shock. I went back to sleep and within 30-60 mins had another attack exactly the same. This time when i came out of it i was terrified to go back to sleep and stayed awake. The following day i came to the conclusion that part of my brain had woken but the part that controls movement was still asleep. I was very relieved to find it was a common thing. Since the initial attacks i have suffered them on a regular yearly basis, i would say probably 3-5 times a year but now i know what they actually are i dont get frightened anymore. After the initial awakening and relising im not asleep because i understand whats going on, i just relax knowing its going to pass shortly. By doing so they dont seem to last as long and i seem to come out of it much quicker. Various times iv suffered 2 attacks the same night within a short period of each other and i have noticed that it seems to be when having not the best of dreams. My sleep pattern in general is very eratic which i also think doesnt help. Anyone who reads this and hasnt experianced this yet all i can tell you if it does happen is just try and relax the best you can and concentrate on your breathing, dont try and move as attempting to do so only causes you to panic. I have no doubt in my mind that this is just a mental state and nothing to do with ghosts though that was my first thoughts……scary stuff!

  42. Thanks for commenting Chris and sorry it took so long to reply i’ve been unable to find the time lately it’s my daughter’s wedding in just over a week.

Anyway, back to this, i believe the one i had was not paranormal, but like you at the time, i thought that any second i was going to see a ghost, which scared the *bleep* out of me. Not all stories of SP have a scientific explanation though, one of my friends who lives in Kentucky, USA, is convinced his SP was not that but caused by an evil presence which he was looking at during his paralysis.

    Thanks Chris.

  43. rebecca says:

i agree ep… infact i dont think its scientific at all.

  44. Hi Rebecca…I think SP is too common for scientists to be able to explain it every time as ‘scientific’…sorry guys, but get real ;)

  45. SCS says:

For those who are getting attacks and don’t want to have them, try sleeping on your front.

  46. Rebecca says:

    Scs

I’ve had them while sleeping on my chest/stomach. If it’s gonna happen it will no matter what position you are sleeping.

  47. Alot of people think it happens when you are just on your back, but i’ve heard that Rebecca that it can happen in any position.

  48. jeff says:

It is so easy for people to write exaggerated stories so that they may participate in the process, as part of the community. It is perfectly human, and a minor inconvenience to some.

Very recently I read one account where there were two people, man and wife I think, present in the same house in different rooms. The husband still in bed, being attacked by the “Hag,” when the wife re-enters the room. She said something like, “what the f*** is that on you?” “It” immediately disappeared. Then she expressed some relief, that now he knows what had been happening to her for years was actually real.

I believe the experience “itself” is primarily a spiritual one as some sort of manipulation of body and mind, then the body is effectively paralyzed. And lastly whatever one is hearing, seeing and feeling isn’t physically real, however, it originates from the spiritual being placing the sensations directly in the human mind. Whatever happened to “telepathy?” Certainly an effective tool to propogate the belief in the story.

The first story far above is real? No evidence with the exception of the story itself.
I would like to know if people have ever sustained any physical injury from an incident.

I wonder what Andy Rooney would say about this? That might make a pretty good skit on SNL! HA HA!

  49. Jeff,

Gosh, that must have been creepy for the man and wife!!

I’ve heard of people waking up with scratches and bruises, but that could have been self inflicted i suppose, but who knows.

  50. Anna says:

As a long term suffer, I thought my experience may be useful to some. I have suffered from SP since a child but in the last year my episodes have increased to sometimes 3 – 4 times a week. I have found that if I sleep in late or during the day or if I am over tired, I will certainly have an episode that night. I have also found that no matter what position I sleep in, it will always come. My episodes are generally the same each time, I’m falling asleep and can feel it coming on (usually by a warm feeling in my body, or with sinister images and feelings of fear). At this stage I can usually wake myself so that I don’t fall into it, but sometimes it is too strong to fight and I’m stuck. The fear seems to come before the sinister visitors or the pain but perhaps that it learnt because I know what is to follow – usually, a dark, male shadow in the room who then comes to squeeze the breath out of me, stabbing pain across my body (which I can feel for a minute or so after waking), sometimes music, usually women screaming, sometimes a voice coming from very close behind me shouting.

Due to getting these experiences often and because I started to dread sleep, I started to take action. I find that although I can’t move, I can change the experience to become less scary. In my last experience (on Monday), I told myself to go with it, to push the experience as far as I could and instead of being terrified, it was an intense and interesting. As you are conscious, you have the power to take control, to remind yourself that it is not real but a product of something that has gone awry in the descent into REM sleep. Why do some people have an imbalance of the chemical that makes you paralysed? Who knows? I don’t think it paranormal, I think we’ve still got a way to go in exploring the mind and its capacities.
