RESURRECTION MARY

THE TRAGEDY OF A TRAPPED SPIRIT

Since the early 1930′s, Chicago’s south side has been home to one of the most documented ghosts in the United States! The beautiful, young blond with piercing blue eyes is known as Resurrection Mary, named after the  Resurrection Cemetery, where her body lies.

Over the years there have been many stories and theories about who this young girl really was and why her spirit continues to travel the road leading to the graveyard. And, many people have claimed that the stories of Resurrection Mary are nothing more than urban legends or campfire ghost stories.

However, the stories of Resurrection Mary have something that most legends and ghost stories don’t have…eyewitness reports. There are literally dozens of credible, eyewitness reports giving dates, times and places of mysterious encounters with the beautiful hitchhiking spirit!

The most accurate version of Mary’s story tells of a young Polish girl who had gone to the O’ Henry Ballroom for a night of dancing with her boyfriend. But, sometime during the night, the two had a disagreement. And Mary, hurt and angry stormed out of the ballroom and proceeded to walk home down Archer Avenue all alone.

Mary didn’t make it back home to her parents that night. Somewhere between the ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery, she was hit by a passing car and left to die all alone in the dark. Her grieving parents had her buried in her favorite white dress and her dancing shoes and Mary has still been known to love dancing!

In fact, she loves dancing so much that several of the eyewitness accounts tell of wonderful nights spent dancing with a beautiful, young blond in a vintage, white dress. Although, they describe her as being cold to the touch and having clammy hands, Mary still continues to attract men even after all these years!

At the end of the night, Mary will ask for a ride home. But, upon nearing the cemetery gates, she will say, “Stop! I need to get out here”! She will often give them a hug and say her goodbyes before passing through the car door and entering the cemetery without opening the large metal gates!

Numerous other reports have told of a young woman walking beside the road in the dark. They’ve stopped and offered her a ride, which she gladly accepts. But again, upon nearing the cemetery, Mary asks them to stop and then suddenly vanishes into the cemetery!

Some people have reported driving down the road and suddenly seeing a young woman in the middle of the road. And, some haven’t seen her in time to stop and have driven right through the apparition. One person even called the police one night when they saw a young woman standing inside the cemetery gate. They believed someone had mistakenly got locked inside the large metal gates.

A different theory of the tragedy which befell Mary is that she is the ghost of a young girl who was on her way to a costume party sometime around Halloween. This girl was also hit by a car and is buried in the same cemetery. She was around 18 or 19 and supposedly had dressed up like a bride for the party, which could explain the long, white dress.

While we probably won’t ever know Mary’s real story, there’s just too many documented sightings to deny her existence. And, however her death occurred, it was tragic, it may be even more tragic that her spirit is doomed to forever walk Archer Avenue and the surrounding area!

I always look forward to reading your articles. As eyepriestess rightly points they’re always unique in the way you write them. You have a knack of getting your message across in a way that is understood by the reader regardless of their country of residence. It allows us all to share many and varied cultures and beliefs. I for one am grateful for this and thankyou for providing such an abundance of well written and informative articles.

  7. Handsome,

you’re soooo naughty in a subtle way though!

    Wayne,

It’s obvious when people have written their own take on a story and that then becomes unique!!

  8. CoCo says:

I love stories like this. But, I didn’t realize that there was a movie about it. WOW I’d love to see it. Movies based on true stories are one of my favorites. I’ll have to find this movie and watch it to see how close the movie comes to the actual facts of this haunting.
