Ghost On Miller Street

GHOST ON MILLER STREET
I have a friend, well actually a colleague I work with; “Chris”. He is the Professional Standards Sergeant in the Administration office of the Police Department and he told me about strange events that happened to him while living on Miller Street.
Let me give you a little background first on how I came upon his testimony.
I was reading a lot of different stories posted on this website; among other websites, and decided to do my own little survey of average people and possible experiences with ghosts or hauntings. I started asking a few co-workers about any experiences they may have had of paranormal activity. Chris works in the same office I do, so, one day I asked Chris if he believed in ghosts. (This is how I opened the conversation). His response was, “I am not really sure”. Typical response I would get from most people. So, to engage further conversation, I asked if he had ever experienced any paranormal activity.
Now understand, Chris is in his early forties; a no nonsense, straight-laced, black and white type of guy. He has been in the military for many years and served several tours in the Middle East. He is basically a no bulls*** type of guy. (Sorry, couldn’t figure out any other way to say it). Anyway, he is a person you would least likely think would have a story to tell. So, imagine my surprise when he responded with, “Yes, I have”.
Needless to say, I was asking more questions than you could shake a stick at. So, I will tell you what he told me; here goes:
Chris found a house for sale extremely cheap, previously owned by an old man named Mr. Hines, had just recently died and the family just wanted to get rid of it. This was several years ago. Needless to say, he bought the house and quickly moved in. The house was small with an unfinished basement. His first experience with Mr. Hines was one night while lying in bed trying to go to sleep. In the quiet of the night he heard music; gospel music. So Chris got up and walked through the house and had determined that the music was coming from the basement. As he got closer to the door to the basement, the music stopped. He went down the stairs to see where the sound could have come from, but to no avail, he had not stored any kind of electronic device in the basement that could have made the sounds of music. All he had stored was dishes and clothes. His first thought was, he was imaging things, and so, Chris went back to bed. After he got settled, the music began to play again. Chris, being the kind of fearless man that he is, decided to just go to sleep. (He is braver than me).
Now, the basement is where Chris’ dog spent her nights. Food and water were also stored there as well. When it was time for bed, Chris would take the dog to the basement so she could eat and retire for the night. On occasion, despite the fact the dog was very friendly and knew not a stranger, the dog would refuse to go to the basement. She would stand at the top of the stairs and shake. Several times Chris would have to force her to the steps and close the door. The dog would whine all night long, never leaving the top step. Other times she would be fine and got to the basement without incident.
Chris, still at this point, not making an issue of the “happenings”, was not concerned. He just went on with his daily activities.
Before long, he started to notice more strange things.
Now remember, Chris is in the military and much disciplined. He is organized and very habitual in his routine.
He started noticing things disappear. For instance, he would set his keys on the table. Later he would go to retrieve them and they would be gone. He would go around the house thinking maybe he set them somewhere else and search for them. After a few moments he would go back to the table and the keys would be sitting there, right where he left them.
After several times of this taking place, Chris started an experiment, simply because he thought maybe he was wrong about the misplaced items. So, he would set something down, like a pen or keys, and he would say out loud, “I have set my keys right here on the kitchen table”. He did this so he would mark in his mind exactly where they were for retrieval. Sure enough after a time he would go to the table to retrieve his keys and they would be gone. He walked around the house as before “searching for the keys”. He would then go back to the table only to find them sitting right where he said he had set them.
By this time, Chris thought he might be going crazy, or he had a ghost in the house. Disappearing items happened frequently. One time it happened with Chris’ department issued gun.
Then things got worse. One evening Chris was sitting at his computer in the living room. Out of his peripheral vision, he saw someone walk from the kitchen to the bathroom. Now the kitchen had a huge table in it which took up most of the room; he saw a person walk around the table which would bring you to the outside perimeter of the living room, go into the hall way, and disappear into the bathroom. Chris didn’t think much of it, as friends and family would often walk into his house without knocking and come in; sometimes going straight to the bathroom. But what he found strange is he never heard the kitchen door open, or the bathroom door close. He got up and looked to find the bathroom door open with no one in it. By then he knew there was something not right; he still heard the occasional gospel music late in the evening, the dog still not going down to the basement on occasion, and the missing items being returned. So, Chris decided that it had to be the ghost of Mr. Hines.
Chris found himself talking to Mr. Hines when his items were missing. He would say, “Ok, Mr. Hines, I need my keys, I’m going to be late”.
Chris told me he never felt like the ghost was evil or out to harm him. He thought maybe the ghost was just having a little fun.
Then late one night, Chris woke up suddenly. It was during the winter. He looked up and saw a silhouette of a man standing in the doorway to his bedroom. His arms were folded leaning against the door way. Chris had a gun in the nightstand and was going to reach for it and shoot the man, thinking that he had an intruder. Chris couldn’t move. The only part of his body that he could move was his head. So, being the fearless guy that he is, decided to go back to sleep.
Chris lived there for about ten years. Most of the activity that took place was when Chris lived alone. At one point while living there, Chris had gotten married, and no activity took place during that time. These things only happened while he was alone.
Chris moved from the house and built a bigger one for him and his family. He leased the house out to a friend of his; “Howard”. Howard was going to eventually buy the house from Chris.
Chris never told anyone about the happenings. He thought people would think he was crazy, and he wasn’t too sure if he wasn’t. So after renting the house to Howard, one day Howard came to pay the rent and mentioned to Chris that something weird was going on in the house. Chris never said a word. Another time Howard told Chris that he kept hearing gospel music being played in the basement, and about things disappearing and reappearing. Finally Chris gave in and told him about the things that happened to him. Chris finally felt like he wasn’t crazy. Howard decided after ten months that he could no longer live in the house and didn’t want to buy it.
Chris eventually sold it.
He told me that a family member of one the Sergeant’s had bought the house and if I was interested, I could ask him to let me talk to the current owners and see if they have experienced anything.
Here are some questions I have…
1. Chris told me that his dog was a very friendly dog and didn’t know a stranger, why would the dog be afraid?
2. Why would a ghost walk around a table?
3. Most of the activity took place in the evening, why?
4. Why would the ghost only do things when Chris was alone?
That is the story.

That is absolutely fascinating and it reminds me of Karen’s experience in, ‘the mason and his wife’ with her ghost stood at the door and quite bizarely with arms folded too.
The poor dog – now that being frightened sort of rings alarm bells, as we all know dogs sense danger and they are not usually afraid of something if it is not something to fear and that is a fact.
Thank you very much for sending this in Liderien. I hope Chris comments on this and i would be extremely keen to know if the new owners are experiencing something.
I’m not sure if i’m right here, but the objects moving is called, ‘teleportation’. I will check this out.
This is so true because of similar experiences that occured in my house, dogs can see ghosts and the dog that we had refused to go upstairs, where there was the most paranormal activity,or at times would lie under the table and just look around with his eyes, like he was watching something. Also, there were days in that house when you could of sworn nothing was there,as for the night I don’t know why they’re more active, also true when my parents divorced and my father lived alone in that house strange things happend ,but when he remarried and his new wife was with him in the house nothing ever bothered them, I don’t know why it’s always when people are alone that ghost’s act like that, I saw one and I was alone I doubt that if the room was full that he would of manifested himself in front of everyone.
Yes, it was ‘teleportation’ here is a ref to it on Wikipedia:
“Teleportation is the transfer of matter from one point to another, more or less instantaneously, either by paranormal means or through technological artifice. Teleportation has been widely utilized in works of science fiction.
Similar is apport, an earlier word used to describe what today might be called teleportation; and bilocation, in which an individual or object is said to be, or appears to be, located in two distinct places at the same instant in time. The word “teletransportation” (which simply expands Charles Fort’s abbreviated term) was first employed by Derek Parfit as part of a thought exercise on identity.
The word was coined in 1931[1][2] by American writer Charles Fort to describe the strange disappearances and appearances of anomalies, which he suggested may be connected. He joined the Greek prefix tele- (meaning “distant”) to the Latin verb portare (meaning “to carry”). Fort’s first formal use of the word was in the second chapter of his 1931 book, Lo! “Mostly in this book I shall specialize upon indications that there exists a transportory force that I shall call Teleportation.” Though, with his typical half-serious jokiness, Fort added, “I shall be accused of having assembled lies, yarns, hoaxes, and superstitions. To some degree I think so myself. To some degree, I do not. I offer the data.”[3] Fort suggested that teleportation might explain various allegedly paranormal phenomena, though, typically, it’s sometimes difficult to tell if Fort took his own “theory” seriously, or instead used it to point out what he saw as the inadequacy of mainstream science to account for strange phenomena”.
Karen and Liderien, I think there is some kind of universal law that proof of ghosts, demons etc only comes to an individual and not to a group. I’m absolutely convinced of this. The only exception is when you use the ouija board as a group, but then something attaches itself to ‘one’ of the players usually and then trouble begins for that person.
I’ve only ever heard of a group of people seeing a vision of angels, never heard of groups seeing ghosts.
When I was having the most activity going on in my house. My dog would not go into my bedroom. One day he laid by the door and growed. When I got up from the sofa and looked into the room. There wasn’t anything there. I haven’t had a lot of activity for a long time. I haven’t seen those misty figures and it feels more peaceful now. My dog will follow me into the bedroom now also.
I still hear the knocking noises at night and Light switch being turned off,, but it doesn’t scare me anymore. I have had things come up missing also, but I haven’t been able to find them yet. Like my VCR control and cell phone ear piece. I keep telling myself that I just misplaced them and they will turn up eventually. I know no one took them, because no one but family has been in my house and they wouldn’t take them. If it is a poltergeist, I wish it would return them. LOL
Nancy,
I must admit things went missing in the house i owned when i was attacked by something. I wasn’t lucky enough to find them again. I have never again seen a letter that i treasured. Then there have been many other items which went missing. I thought it was just down to misplacing them too, but it does make you wonder doesn’t it?
I know alot of people who say that it is strange, I haven’t had anything go missing here only in the U.S. at that house! If you read my last comment on “strange but true” http://www.worldmysteriesandtrueghosttales.com/strange-but-true/ that’s the only weird things that have happend here
Chris told me he would be interested in knowing what you guys comment on here, though he is not very interested in ghosts or paranormal activity. I will see if he will comment on the site.
I asked him if he ever thought about asking the family about Mr. Hines, but the family had a squabble about the price of the house and in the end, didn’t have much to do with Chris because he had already put money down on the house so they couldn’t get out of the contract. Needless to say, he wasnt that interested in knowing why or how. I, on the other hand would have been asking a gazillion questions of the family.
I might see if I can talk with the family who currently reside in the home.
Liderien,
If you could talk to that family it would be amazing if they too had experiences.
Funny all this, as my brother and his wife were approached by an ex tennent who once rented a house off my brother’s wife’s parents. He went on to tell them about strange things happening in the house and wondered if my brothers wife’s parents had ever had anything happen to them when they lived in it and before they rented it out.
I am getting her to write the story as things certainly did happen, but it won’t be up here for a while as she is hard to pin down and talk to.
Chris , will be a believer after this! I can understand him being in the position he’s in and a military man, none the less, but I think somewhere he knows it’s true, but doesn’t want to ruin his reputation, that’s why lots of people hesitate to tell their story!
I am not really sure if any of that is an issue with Chris; reputation or otherwise. I don’t think he is all that interested in it. He is just not that kind of guy. None of the happenings were a big deal with him either. He is not the curious sort like some of us.
When I asked him about the “haunting”, he was not hesitant at all to tell me. He just doesn’t really think about stuff like that.
I sent him the link to his story on this website so he can see it for himself. We will see if he posts any comments.
This story really held my interest. I am intrigued by those stories when the person experiencing the paranormal activity is a skeptic.
I think each person is different in their ability to sense the paranormal. Most of the time, if I have a lot of activity going on, I may sense things, but I don’t actually see them. When I am alone, and this is my case, not necessarily someone else’s, I do tend to be more aware of what is going on in another realm of existance. My guess would be that the reason Chris saw these things when he was alone is because his senses were more aware, and not distracted by other people being around. The ghost going around the table though, that one has me stumped.
Eyepriestess, this is the second time I’ve visited your site with no probs on the evil computer demon. Rejoice!
hi guys, now this here is just my opinion on Lideriens questions…
maybe the dog was afraid the old man ghost scolded her at times. who knows, my dog is afraid of my husband at times after he scolds him and then he gets over it.
the ghost walked around the table because he dosent know hes dead and was afraid to walk into it. and most of the activity occurred in the evening because the host, thinking he is still alive is living his life. like he is at work during the day or out and about, if that makes sense.
as for why things happened when chris was alone, who knows.
thanks for the story it was great.
Scary,
It was a great story, i agree and what you say makes sense.
I’m glad you got your computer sorted out, it must have driven you nuts. Nice to have you back again scary!
Rebecca,
what you said about the dog, well, it is possible that the ghost could have been scolding her…poor dog!
NB: Im away for most of the weekend, so i won’t be able to let any further comments in until late Sunday. Have a great weekend
Skeptics: My husband has always been a skeptic. When I first started seeing and hearing things I didn’t tell him. In my story about Misty images. I started seeing these misty images that looked like they were trying to form into something. It scared me so bad that I covered my head and waited until they were gone. I didn’t tell my husband about it because he was a sketic. One night he woke me up and he was scared out of his wits. He told me he saw three women in our bedroom. They had long dark hair and flowing gowns. He said that they were levitating on my side of the bed. When he woke me up they vanished. Later he saw a woman and child and one time just a woman pulling a gown over her head. He moved out of the bedroom for awhile. I told them to leave, plus I threw out the dream catcher.I think they have left, because I haven’t seen the misty images for a long time. I don’t know why they came to my house for sure, but I think they attached theirselves to a dream catcher that my brother gave me, because he also saw something like that in his house in Oregon at one time. Now since we haven’t seen them for several months, my husband has become a sketic again and says he was just dreaming. LOL
Nancy, really? Do you think that dream catchers really work? I was thinking of buying one. Don’t they have to be made by indians though in order for them to work? The ones here a probably made in china!
Karen, My brother made the dream catcher that gave me. He was taught how to make them and some Indian jewellery by an old Indian woman that he looked after, after he retired and rented a small house behind her big house. He took her shopping and to her doctor appts. In exchange she gave him a lot of her Indian jewellery and feather and old arrow heads. She was in her ninties. When she died the son’s sold the houses, so he move out. While he lived there, he said that he would see women with long hair and gowns in his house at night. He moved to an apartment and took his Indian things with him. He gave me several items, including the dream catcher. I gave the neckalaces to my daughters and grandaughters. They haven’t had any paranormal experiences though. Yet! LOL
Hi, I’m Chris, the guy in the story. My experience was intresting. Linderien pretty much told you the whole ordeal. My ghost never did anything to harm me or scare me. It just seemed like “it” like to have a little fun. Everything that was lost was found. This experience was something I came to accept and lived with. I’m not sure if it was the ghost of Mr. Hines. I just started calling “Him” Mr. Hines because Mr. Hines died in the house. I felt that if “something” was there he should at least have a name.
Bentleigh (My old Golden Retriever) did not like what ever it was. She would refuse to go downstairs some nights and would just whine if I put her downstairs anyway. She usually ended up sleeping in the bathroom on those nights. Sometimes when we would be sitting in the living room, she would growl at the dining room. I just recently remembered that. My poor girl had to be put to sleep back in 2000.
My friend Howard bailed as soon as confirmed what he had experienced. I think his exact words were, “F that, I’m outta here.
I’m a pretty down to earth type of guy. I’m still not sure about a lot of things, but I’m sure about Mr. Hines.
I’m so glad you commented Chris, it is quite a story you have there. My dad is not usually impressed by alot of stories, but yours really made him take notice.
Your poor dog, sorry she died, you certainly know about it when you lose a retriever, they just have something about them. My sister had one and he was so beautiful and such a wonderful character. She’ll never get over him.
For Howard to leave like that says alot too. I’ve heard of people leaving a house they own and going on to rent a house just to get away from a haunting. You just would not do that would you? unless something was terrorising you.
Thank you for allowing Liderien to share this Chris, she did a good job of writing it for you!
Hi Chris,
Thanks so much for allowing us to read your story..
I don’t know what was going on in your previous home.. but it must of been something.. for more than yourself to experience things happening..
I bet you were glad when you finally moved.. and your dog was too.
Mama’s chick
Hi Chris: Mina here. I will tell my children this story (now that its halloween). But truly I admire your courage. It is like you know but you also have a busy life to live that you are willing to share your house when you are not there. I say this with all respect and I am not laughing! The room my children sleep in was built in 1906 and it is constantly making noises. I tell the boys its the scuarrels eating the dogs food outside their sliding glass door. Once a month though I choose to sleep in this bedroom sending my boys to sleep with dad in my bedroom. I witness things around dead time. So my question is: Does it help when you call them by their name? They do not like to be known do they?
Mina
I’m glad everyone has enjoyed my experience. To Mama’s Chick, I wasn’t really glad to move it was just time to upgrade my home. My dog on the other hand was delighted. To Mina, I don’t know if it helped by calling thier name. I’m not even sure if it was Mr. Hines. I just gave whatever it was that name. Looking back the whole experience is kinda funny.
