Strange Sighting

STRANGE SIGHTING

One evening around November time, I went for a workout at the gym which was located near to my parents home, at a place called, Beauchief Hall, Sheffield, UK. This was a large manor house surrounded by extensive grounds.

To get to the manor you had to either drive,
or walk up an approximate mile long, isolated road which was known as Beachief Drive. The drive had an old church and graveyard at the bottom and then fields either side as you passed the church. There were no street lamps.

I didn't own a car at the time, so I walked up the drive to the gym; I did my workout and then headed back out of the manor's grounds and back onto Beauchief Drive. There was no one else around as usual, only people who used the gym or ran the manor house used the Beauchief Drive, so unless someone came out of the gym at exactly the same time, then you were on your own.

It was fully dark by now but there was some light from the manor filtering onto the grounds and the top end of the drive, together with the moonlight in a clear sky.

I've never been one to be spooked easily as I am a large, stocky build and train regularly, so I've always felt confident in defending myself.

As I began walking down the drive I heard a rustling noise in a thick hawthorn bush to my right side, I immediately turned and saw a dark head inside the bush turn sharply as though I had startled it. We were almost face to face, only about a 12 inch gap separated us and I could clearly see black eyes staring back at me. I knew it couldn't be an animal as its eyes were level with mine and I stand at 5' 11". I have never been so frightened at the sight of those eyes, they were extremely menacing. I turned away and started running down the drive - not stopping once until I reached the heavily lit main road at the bottom.

I stopped to catch my breath and try and make sense of what I had just seen. The eyes and the way, whatever it was, turning in shock like that, reminded me of the film, Jack the Ripper, when he thought he was about to be caught and he waited down an alleyway, as he turned his head in surprise, his eyes were black. That is exactly how it turned its head. If this was a person, how could he be inside a thick hawthorn bush? it isn't possible.

The next day, in the daylight, I went back up Beauchief Drive and to the top where the hawthorn bush was. I stood looking at it and wondered how anything could have been inside the bush, there was less than millimetre gaps between each prickly branch, it was impossible.
The bush was set back about 4 feet and stood about 6 feet high.

I'm not saying that this is paranormal as i'm not really into this, but I must admit that this has had me very puzzled ever since.

  1. WOW, that almost reminds me of the experience that I had when I saw a ghost, I went back days later just looking at the same spot, where it was. Maybe it was an animal in the bushes.

  2. David said that it was at his eye level, so it couldn't have been an animal.

Did you do that too Isis, i did that when i had a weird experience, i kept going back to the top of the stairs and looking down and thinking how could that have happened.

  3. Forgot to say, i know this person and it took some doing to let me print this, his name has been changed thats the only way he would agree.

  4. wow.... i would have ran too.
unexplained things tend to play on your mind a bit until there answered. but this one probably wont be solved.

good luck finding an explanation:) (that wasn't a sarcastic good luck by the way) typing has no tone.

  5. Hi zxgirl, no we don't think you are being sarcastic, but i know what you mean, i'm misunderstood ALOT! lol

That's just it, he's tried to see it logically but he can't, but you still cant get out of him that he believes in the paranormal. This is one stubborn guy :)

  6. Well, you know me, eyepriestess.....I have had too many experiences in my life that could not be explained. For a long time I tried to run from it, then I tried to find out why.

I grew up in a family of skeptics and I have heard every natural explanation out there. The fact is....some things happen, and they just can't be explained. I am so glad you were able to persuade this person to share the story here. I know that when my mother, who is a die-hard skeptic had an experience with a strange shadow figure...and it paralyzed her with fear.

I most certainly would have run from whatever that was in the bush. It couldn't have been good....even skeptics have gut feelings.....and it's obvious this creature he saw had no good intent. I'm going to assume there haven't been any more experiences since this particular one?

Love you EP....just wanted you to know that! =)

  7. I know don't you just hate that, when no one believes you? Fortunately everyone in my family believed me when I saw the ghost, as they too experience strange things in the house too! I don't know what that could of been, but it's true, they're things that can't be explained!

  8. P.S. Scary thanks!

  9. Hey scary,

yes I know you have had your fair share of experiences and like you we're always getting people trying to de-bunk us , ha ha, but nothing will ever explain things you and I have encountered. Love you too by the way ;)

David (alias name) has never had anything else happen to him and although I have known him all his life it was only recently he told me this and that was only because i was talking with him about something his wife's family had gone through. I just said, 'have you never had just the slightest odd thing happen to you?' That's when he told me this and I was pretty shocked as you can imagine. He told me very casually though and I had to write it with him as he just wasn't that bothered. He is very skeptical about the paranormal, but that experience has him puzzled.

The thing that got him most was the eye level in which he saw this and the thick bush that a person just wouldn't be able to get into and wouldn't want to either. He said he could clearly see that the eyes were fully black, not even the white that surrounds an iris was there.

  10. That was a spooky encounter alright. Maybe whoever it was, was not actually in the bush but on the other hiding, perhaps. Do bears live there? They are tall when on two feet. Outside of that, I have no normal answer.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Pitch, no we don't have wild bears in the UK.

Do you mean on the other side of the hedge? If so, he saw the eyes close up and the face was inside the hawthorne, even a large animal couldn't get into that kind of a bush. I'm going to try and get him to reply, but this wont be today.

  12. I hadn't visited this story in a while.....it still gives me chills to read it. Sometimes I almost like it better...*is that wrong to say* when a skeptic has an experience that can't be explained. I don't know though, some are like my dad that say "well, if I can't figure out what did it, then I will just say that there IS an explanation, and I just haven't found it yet". SO frustrating.

I'm glad that 'David' shared the story here, and is willing to concede that he has no explanation for it...even though he is normally skeptical.

  13. Hey, everyone!
That is scary! Another story to give me nightmares! lol
Was this thing wearing clothes? Could he see the shape of the body?
Yeah, see if you can get him to reply.

  14. He only saw the face, but knew it was standing at human level because of the eye level...freaky!

  15. yes i like this... the idea of the hawthorn a ery thorny bush.... and that this entity lets say... had chosen that bush.... i want to go there....lol
do you suppose... any possability it might have been an owl? they have huge eyes and ofcourse cand gain level height..... just wonderded if you and your brother had explored that possability.... or was it that the eyes were distinctly human? its certainly un-nerving.... and how he describes the walk to the abbey is same kind of walk to the ruins i mentioned... only no activity down there... no lights... and only a rookey to make noise...

  16. please excuse my typos

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well, he said that NOTHING could have been in that bush, it was far too thick, he went back to check it out clearly. We talked about everything and he is very logical in his thinking. He isn't spooked easily either.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Not a problem Paul, its quicker to type, lol

    ReplyDelete
  19. yes lol... i tend to text or type now without looking... i seem to know where letters are... and i go too quickly... well its intersting experience... i would love to get pic of that tree see if any orbs around

  20. We left there years ago, we live South of England now. The whole area around the Abbey was very spooky.

  23. I've not heard of it Paul, but i'll loook out for it and tell my brother. He is ex-navy guy my brother and as tough as they come, so it had to be scary for him to be freaked out!

    ReplyDelete
  24. The weird thing about it was that my brother never mentioned it to me or the rest of my family until very recently, even though he saw this a long time ago. He only came out with it after i got this site going. I kept saying to him, have you never had anything at all happen to you...then he came out with this! I was shocked!!
